PRESENTATION OF ART PROJECT AT THE MILESTONE BUILDING LOCATED AT 72-960 AND 72-980 FRED WARING DRIVE – PRESENTATION BY MICHAEL HOMME (Continued from the meeting of July 17, 2002) Mr. Homme presented a sculpture of a man standing by the bus shelter at the corner of Fred Waring and Monterey. It will be a bronze sculpture made by Artist Jon Krawczyk. It was moved by Commissioner Brody and seconded by Commissioner Grochau to approve the art project of the “Walking Man” at the Milestone Building located at 72-960 and 72-980 Fred Waring Drive. Motion carried unanimously with Commissioners Greenberg, Hough, and Roberge absent. IX. OLD BUSINESS A. REQUEST FOR FINAL APPROVAL OF ARTWORK FOR THE 2003 EL PASEO EXHIBITION – PRESENTATION BY JOHN NAGUS Mr. Nagus distributed a memo with information regarding the changes or additions for the 2003 El Paseo Exhibition lineup. Mr. Nagus stated that there were two pieces he could not confirm in which he removed them from the selection (Elizabeth Edwards Gallery and Learsi Gallery). Mr. Nagus reviewed 14 pieces of artwork that he has chosen for the Exhibition. Pad numbers 6 and 13 remain empty due to no confirmation from the two galleries. Site 5 is work done by Minutes August 14, 2002 3 Artist Russell Jacques which is presentation of his work, not the actual piece. He is planning to do a maquette of the proposed piece. Commissioner Brody was concerned about the piece having a reflection on the stainless steel. Mr. Nagus stated that since it will be site specific he could use a different type of material to make sure the reflection is not as intense driving down the street at certain times of the day. He will bring back site #6 at the meeting of September 18. Mr. Twedt asked Mr. Nagus if the City was to provide the rocks for Site 9 and Mr. Nagus replied that the City could provide some boulders from the Corporation Yard. #13 was pulled due to no contact with Learsi Gallery – may have closed. Due to site 13 originally being of natural nature it was suggested to possibly use Roger Hopkins who does rock work, which might be good, keeping with the aspects of the desert environment. Installation date is planned for January 2003. There was discussion of having a reception. Mayor Pro Tem suggested having El Paseo closed off for an hour with golf carts available to tours of the Exhibition. Discussed having live music. Janet thought we could consider having several El Paseo businesses/galleries serve hors d’oeuvres as opposed to having a set location. It was moved by Commissioner Koroczynsky and seconded by Commissioner Brody to accept the final approval of the artwork for the 2003 El Paseo Exhibition presented by John Nagus. Motion was carried unanimously with Commissioners Greenberg, Hough, and Roberge absent. B. REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $10,000.00 FOR THE VISITING ARTISTS LECTURE SERIES (IN COLLABORATION WITH THE PALM SPRINGS DESERT MUSEUM) Mr. Twedt stated that due to a 30 percent budget cut he was asked to return to the AIPP Commission requesting $10,000.00 to be taken out of its budget out of Architectural Design and Service, which has $50,000.00 in it. He added that he has been working with Kristy Kneiding and Piper Close on the Lecture Series advertising and Ms. Close has volunteered to pay for a brochure on the Lecture Series that would cost approximately $3,500.00 that he thought would have to come out of this budget. Approximately 6,000 brochures will be mailed to all art galleries, art places in San Diego and Los Angeles. Mr. Twedt reported that Yoko Ono would not be available. Minutes August 14, 2002 4 It was moved by Commissioner Grochau and seconded by Commissioner Broder to approve $10,000.00 to be delegated from AIPP’s Architectural budget and request City Council’s approval of this project.
