Art In Public Places Commission
CONVENE Commissioner Grochau called the meeting to order at 8:35 a.m.,
Wednesday, June 20, 2001.
ROLL CALL Members Present: Ilene Broder, Joe Dickinson, Suzanne
Greenberg, Kevin Grochau, Katherine Hough, and Denise Roberge
Staff Present: Community Arts Manager Carolyn Miller, Catherine
Walker, and Recording Secretary Debbie Thompson
Members Absent: Janet Brody, Tim Bartlett, and Christine Pena
Others Present: Councilmember Jean Benson, Sloane Halloran-
Lewis, Sonia Campbell, Mark Stephenson, Kimberley Shannon,
Scott Curtis, and Desiree Doerfler
APPROVAL OF
MINUTES Upon Motion by Commissioner Greenberg, and second
by Commissioner Hough, the Minutes of May 16, 2001, were
approved by unanimous vote.

DISCUSSION
ITEMS A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION
1. City Council approved request to readvertise and call
for bids for the Peace Memorial renovations (Meeting
of May 24, 2001).
2. City Council approved the agreement between the
City of Palm Desert and the Palm Springs Desert
Museum for “After the Dinosaurs: Ice Age Mammals”
Exhibition (Meeting of June 14, 2001).

NEW BUSINESS A. REVIEW OF DESIGN CONCEPT FOR RUTH CHRIS
STEAK HOUSE – PRESENTATION BY DESIREE
DOERFLER OF D-ZIGN INTERIOR PLANNING AND
PROJECT MANAGEMENT, INC.
Ms. Doerfler presented a rendering of the Ruth Chris Steak
House that features stained glass windows as the public art
component. As the artist of the project, Ms. Doerfler
presented two maquettes demonstrating two of the five
patterns designed for the windows.
It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by
Commissioner Greenberg to accept the design concept for
Ruth Chris Steak House. Motion carried with a 5-1-0 vote with
Commissioner Roberge opposing and Commissioners Brody,
Bartlett, and Pena absent.
B. APPROVAL OF AIPP WEBSITE DESIGN –
PRESENTATION BY SITEWIRE CORPORATION
Following research and review of proposals from several
companies, Sitewire Marketplace Solutions was selected
because of their ability to provide both design and
implementation of a website and were within the budget.
Sitewire presented design and color concepts. The goal of
the Art In Public Places website is to feature the art
collection, installations, events, artists in the slide registry,
and guidelines and procedures for the program.
Upon question by Commissioner Roberge, Ms. Miller
responded that the website has been in the budget for the
last three years.
It was moved by Commissioner Greenberg and
seconded by Commissioner Hough to approve the award of
contract of $22,500.00 to Sitewire Corporation to design and
implement the website. Motion carried unanimously.

C. REVIEW OF ARTWORK FOR THE EL PASEO EXHIBITION
2002
Rose and Pierro Mussi who own Artworks Foundry in
Berkeley, California, have offered the loan of twelve bronze
sculptures by Peter Voulkos for display on El Paseo. The
artwork would not be for sale and would be on loan for one
year. Large signage with information about the artist would
be placed on appropriate pads throughout the exhibition.
Commissioner Hough stated that it would be quite a coup for
the City of Palm Desert if the City could showcase Peter
Voulkos as a solo exhibition.
It was moved by Commissioner Roberge and seconded
by Commissioner Broder to accept the artwork by Artist Peter
Voulkos for the 2001/2002 exhibition, period of one year, and
that the exhibit not include any other artist. Motion carried
with a 5-1-0 vote with Commissioner Dickinson opposing and
Commissioners Brody, Bartlett, and Pena absent.

MEDICAL BUILDING LOCATED AT 73-950 ALESSANDRO
DRIVE (Continued from the meeting of May 16, 2001)
It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by
Commissioner Greenberg to continue the review of artwork for
Desert Aurora Medical Building located at 73-950 Alessandro
Drive. Motion carried unanimously.
B. REVIEW OF ARTWORK FOR THE NORWALK
FURNITURE BUILDING LOCATED AT 73-495 HIGHWAY III
(Continued from the meeting of May 16, 2001)
It was moved by Commissioner Hough and seconded by
Commissioner Dickinson to continue the review of artwork for
the Norwalk Furniture building located at 73-495 Highway III to
a date uncertain. Motion carried unanimously.

PROJECT STATUS
REPORTS 1. Peace Memorial
Ms. Miller stated that bids for the landscape for the Peace
Memorial would be opened today.
2. Desert Dessert
Ms. Miller stated that renovation of Desert Dessert would
begin soon. The landscape has been reworked to minimize
future water damaged to the artwork.
3. Desert Sports Center
No report.
4. Monterey Median
The Monterey Median project will go to Council on July 19
for final approval.
5. Westfield Shoppingtown Palm Desert
No report.

11. Legends Field
The dedication on June 2, of the plaques for the seven
female baseball players was successful.

REMARKS 1. ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION – Joe Dickinson
No report.
2. CIVIC ARTS COMMITTEE – Sloane Halloran-Lewis
* Upcoming Thursday night concert/movie schedule: Side
Street Strutters concert on June 21 and the movie Stuart
Little on June 28.
* Recapped discussions from the retreat.
* The item for the Palm Desert International Piano
Competition was continued until July.
3. PLANNING COMMISSION – Sonia Campbell
* The Ruth Chris Steak House building was approved.
Commissioner Grochau thanked Ms. Walker for the website
work and research.
STAFF REPORTS
AND REMARKS Commissioner Hough invited the Commissioners to the
Navajo Exhibition on June 29.
The Palm Springs Desert Museum is starting its dollar days
on July 1 for a campaign regarding electricity conservation.
Ms. Miller stated that the field trip to Pasadena may be
postponed until September or October.
