ROLL CALL Present: Absent: Tim Bartlett None Janet Brody, Chair Ilene Broder Joe Dickinson Kevin Grochau Suzanne Greenberg Katherine Hough Denise Roberge Also Present: Carolyn Miller, Community Arts Manager Catherine Walker, Public Art Intern Sloane Halloran-Lewis, Civic Arts Liaison Sonia Campbell, Planning Commission Liaison Debbie Thompson, Recording Secretary III. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS NONE Art In Public Places Commission Minutes December 19, 2001 2 IV. CONSENT CALENDAR Minutes of the meeting held on November 21, 2001. Upon Motion by Commissioner Hough and seconded by Commissioner Greenberg, the Minutes of November 21, 2001, were approved by unanimous vote. V. DISCUSSION ITEMS A. ORAL REVIEW OF CITY COUNCIL ACTION NONE VI. CONSENT ITEMS HELD OVER NONE VII. NEW BUSINESS A. SELECTION OF NEW COMMITTEE CHAIR AND CO- CHAIR It was reported by the Nominating Committee that Commissioner Tim Bartlett was nominated as Chair and Commissioner Joe Dickinson as Co-Chair for the 2002 term. Both commissioners accepted the nomination. It was moved by Commissioner Greenberg and seconded by Commissioner Broder to accept the Nominating Committee’s recommendation to appoint Commissioner Bartlett as Chairman and Commissioner Dickinson as Co- Chair for 2002 beginning January 16, 2002. Motion carried unanimously. B. REQUEST FOR 1) FINAL APPROVAL OF BUS SHELTER DESIGN FOR ART IN PUBLIC PLACES COMPLIANCE; 2) A REFUND OF ART IN PUBLIC PLACES FUNDS IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,808.58 – APPLICANT, TIM BARTLETT Ms. Miller reported that the bus shelter designed by Commissioner Tim Bartlett received an award from City Council for the design and construction of the bus shelter. It Art In Public Places Commission Minutes December 19, 2001 3 was noted that this particular design be suggested as a model for architects to use for future bus stops. It was moved by Commissioner Grochau and seconded by Commissioner Hough to return the Art In Public Places fees in the amount of $1808.58. Motion carried by a 7-0-1 vote with Commissioner Bartlett abstaining. VIII. CONTINUED BUSINESS NONE IX. OLD BUSINESS NONE X. PROJECT STATUS REPORTS 1. Monterey Median Ms. Miller reported that the Monterey Median project went to Council last week and the project was discontinued. 2. Westfield Shoppingtown Palm Desert No report. 3. El Paseo Exhibition Twelve pieces of Peter Voulkos’ artwork were installed on December 12. Lighting adjustments need to be made. Large pots with flowers will be installed on the large pad. The opening is scheduled for January 17, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. between San Pablo and Larkspur with the reception to be held at Doug Arango’s Restaurant. Ms. Miller stated that she has received great response on the artwork. 4. Website Text is being edited for the Website. 5. Atrium No report. Legends Field The Parks and Recreation Commission is in the process of searching for a local sports figure for one of the columns at Legends Field. XI. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. STAFF Ms. Miller thanked Commissioner Brody for a wonderful job as Chairman for the past two years and thanked the Commission for giving their time and talent to the Commission. In regard to the El Paseo Exhibition Guidelines, Ms. Miller asked the Commissioners to think about Gallery participation, non profit groups loaning art, and mixing profit and nonprofit. B. COMMISSION MEMBERS Chairman Brody expressed her appreciation and efforts from the Commission members. She added that the Commission membership should be increased. • COMMISSION REQUEST FOR ACTION None • COMMISSION REPORTS Upon question by Commissioner Bartlett, Ms. Miller replied that the Commission would be very much involved in the 12 acre site project. CIVIC ARTS COMMITTEE – Sloane Halloran-Lewis * A new Chair and Vice-Chair were chosen. * The theme for the 2002 Student Art & Essay contest was chosen as “Palm Desert, My All American City”. The award ceremony will be held in the amphitheater to accommodate more families. * The Art and Culture Elements were reviewed and suggestions were given. * Holiday in the Park was successful. * A golf tournament will be held on December 30, 2001 with Gisborne and Palm Desert. 2. PLANNING COMMISSION – Sonia Campbell No report. XII. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 a.m. Debbie L. Thompson Recording Secretary
