Executive Summary: The goal of the "Sitting Pretty" program is to work in conjunction with the El Paseo Exhibition to highlight Palm Desert's growing art community and the El Paseo shopping district. A call for proposals will be distributed to local galleries and artists who live in or are affiliated with the City of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley. Included in the call will be the specific design criteria for the benches. Once the proposals are received the Art in Public Places Commission will review them and select up to 20 artists, each of whom will be asked to create a detailed proposal for a bench. Each selected artist will be paid an honorarium of $250 from the AIPP Fund for his or her proposal, for a total $5,000. Final proposals will be exhibited in the North Wing Gallery during the 2004/2005 season as a marketing tool to introduce the project and to provide a library of available art benches for the solicitation of sponsors. Sponsorship will consist of full funding of the benches including materials, artist fees, and installation. Once sponsors are identified, the benches will be on permanent display. Sponsorship is open to any interested party, including private art galleries, commercial businesses, and government agencies. Benches would be installed as sponsors are identified, and would replace the existing benches on El Paseo. Background: Staff, including Ruth Ann Moore, met with John Nagus and Linda Jacques, both of whom are members of the EL Paseo business community, to discuss their concepts for 1 )ntract No. C21950 the "Sitting Pretty" bench program. Ms. Jacques and Mr. Nagus designed the program to mirror the approach that was taken when curating the 2003 El Paseo Exhibition ("palm desert art WORKS"), which is currently installed along the median on El Paseo. When curating the "palm desert art WORKS" exhibition John focused on including Palm Desert art galleries and artists either associated with these galleries or connected to Palm Desert in the group of artists included in the exhibition. The same approach would be taken in the "Sitting Pretty" exhibition. The Art in Public Places Commission reviewed and approved the proposal at its September 17, 2003 regularly scheduled meeting.
