4.PRESENTATIONS:
A.PALM DESERT CIVIC ACADEMY -OCTOBER 2023
July 12, 2023
Digital Strategies Coordinator Penta provided an overview of the Palm Desert Civic Academy
pilot program scheduled for October 2023; detailed the application process and responded to
Committee Member inquiries.
5.NON-AGENDA PUBLIC COMMENT:
Deputy Director Lawrence read aloud written comments from Mayor Pro Tern Quintanilla in
support of the Sun Crawlers artwork by John Cuevas and the 2024 Student Essay
Contest themes: "Palm Desert Would be Beautiful If' and "How Can I Help My
Neighborhood?"
Don Graybill, a Palm Desert resident, and Cultural Resource Committee Member, urged
the Committee to consider opportunities to showcase art collections created by local artist
Ron Backer.
6.CONSENT CALENDAR:
A.APPROVAL OF MINUTES
By consensus, the Committee continued the approval of the Cultural Arts Committee
Regular Meeting minutes of June 14, 2023, to the next Regular Meeting.
7.ACTION CALENDAR
A.APPROVAL OF THE REPLACEMENT OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL CABINET ARTWORK
SUN CRAWLERS BY ARTIST JOHN CUEVAS
Deputy Director Lawrence and Administrative Assistant Thompson presented a staff
report regarding the redesigned Sun Crawlers traffic signal cabinet artwork created by
John Cuevas and responded to Committee Member inquiries.
Following discussion, MOTION BY CHAIRPERSON HAUER, SECOND BY VICE
CHAIRPERSON ADNEY, CARRIED 6-0, to approve replacement of artwork Sun
Crawlers by artist John Cuevas on a traffic signal cabinet to the southwest corner of
Highway 111 and El Paseo (East).
B.SELECTION OF A THEME FOR THE 2024 STUDENT ART AND ESSAY CONTEST
Administrative Assistant Thompson presented a staff report regarding the Student Art and
Essay Contest and responded to Committee Member inquiries.
During the course of discussion, individual Committee Members offered commentary for
consideration during future essay contests as follows. The below points do not necessarily
reflect Committee consensus:
•Consider a more focused theme of personal or simplistic nature.
•Select a theme K-12th grade students will find relatable.
• Consider a theme centered on contemporary topics such as climate change,
diversity, current events, or bullying.
•Consider alternative essay formats such as an illustrated essay or graphic novel.
• Make top essays from previous years available to the Committee prior to the
selection of a new theme.City of Palm Desert Page 2
