Because the Brown Act does not allow the Commission to act on items not listed on the agenda, members may briefly respond or refer the matter to staff for a report and recommendation at a future meeting. 4. CITY OF PALM DESERT INFORMATIONAL MEMO To: Public Safety Commission From: Chris Escobedo, Assistant City Manager Date: February 8, 2023 Subject: APPROVE 2023 WORK PLAN At the January 25, 2023 meeting, the commissioners discussed their individual priorities, reviewed the list of items presented during the discussion, and through consensus established their work plan. Staff committed to bringing the work plan back in writing so the Commission can review and approve it. Work Plan • Traffic Enforcement – reviewing traffic enforcement programs, receiving updates, and providing input on traffic calming and related traffic Capital Improvement Projects. • Public Safety Budget – review the police and fire budget early in the process with regular updates, including a review of fire and police contract rates and staffing levels. Also, on the fire side including a review of paramedic unit response to assisted living facilities. • Community Oriented Policing – discussing community-oriented policing, receiving presentations on programs, and providing a recommendation to the City Council. Tours The Commission also discussed having tours and getting first-hand interaction with public safety services. Hearing the request, staff has scheduled a tour of the emergency operation center during the February 8th meeting. Additional ones will be scheduled including tours of fire stations, Palm Desert Station, and ride-a-longs. Next Steps Once approved, staff will begin scheduling items for future agendas so the commission can make progress on the work plan. Each meeting will provide updates on the activity. The Commission can establish subcommittees comprised of no more than 2 commissioners if the Commission elects to use subcommittees.
