Cal Fire Battalion Chief Beverlin provided an update on the following topics: •Fire Station 102 preparations; •Fire Prevention Month and Mini Muster Program; •Shop with a Firefighter and Toy Drive events; and •Recent significant incidents. The first arriving company officer reported fire through the roof of a single story four plex residential building. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the original unit, however there was significant water and smoke damage to two of the adjoining units. This resulted in a total displacement of 4 adults and 3 children. City of Palm Desert building and safety will need to respond to evaluate the structure. 23CARRU163545 11/4/2023 3:03:00AM CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire resources responded to a structure fire at 38364 Poppet Canyon Drive in the City of Palm Desert. The first arriving Company Officer reported a double wide mobile home with smoke visible from the door. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the kitchen area, and rescued the family pet. One adult and one child were displaced due to the damage of the structure, but declined assistance at this time from the Red Cross. 23CARRU166162 11/9/2023 12:11:00AM CALFIRE / Riverside County Fire units responded to a commercial structure fire with explosions at 73818 Dinah Shore Drive in the City of Palm Desert. The first arriving Company Officer reported heavy fire through the roof of a commercial building in and industrial area with one civilian burn injury. Additional resources were requested due to the size of the building, amount of fire activity, and continuous explosion due to the chemicals inside and outside the building. The Riverside County Hazardous Materials team, Riverside Environmental Health, and Riverside County Sheriff were requested due to the chemicals and products stored in the building. The civilian burn injury was treated and transported by the first arriving Palm Desert Paramedic unit for stabilization to the closest hospital, before being transferred to a burn center. Crews were able to contained the fire to the original unit, however the building suffered major damage from a roof collapse and compromised walls. The building will need to be red tagged and evaluated by City Officials that are on site. This item is coming to the Committee to formally vote on its adoption. Thereafter, it will be placed on the City Council agenda for review. Work Plan •Traffic Safety – reviewing traffic enforcement programs, receiving updates, and providing input on traffic calming and related traffic Capital Improvement Projects. •Public Safety Budget – review the police and fire budget early in the process with regular updates, including a review of fire and police contract rates and staffing levels. •Community Oriented Policing – discussing community-oriented policing like public service announcements, crime prevention, receiving presentations on programs, and providing a recommendation to the City Council. The Committee elected to maintain these major priorities as their 2024 workplan. The refinements included are to review and address calls for service, response times, and staffing levels for both police and fire. Also, to include monthly updates on the City’s Automated License Plate Recognition Program. The Committee volunteered to serve on subcommittees to assist staff with the workplan. Committee Member Gary Bindman recently resigned, which means Alternate Member Stephen Nelson assumes Committee Member Bindman’s position and subcommittee assignment.
