Page 22 Hovley Soccer Park Observations by Chair Gregg Akkerman Fall is a wonderful time to visit Hovley Park in Palm Desert. As seen in the accompanying photos, the Ironwood Park is a soccer-designated park but with many other amenities. The most prominent Hovley Park features are the 5 soccer fields that double as open-grass areas inviting activities such as kite flying, disc-golf, and other casual field-sports. Even on a relaxed weekday, the park had many users taking advantage of the soccer, basketball, and running areas. I checked the bathroom and various trash receptacles, finding them all perfectly clean. I found one inoperable drinking fountain and reported it on the Palm Desert app. The playground areas make use of wheel-chair-friendly surfaces that allow more interaction for those who are mobility challenged. I recently walked the length of the entire grounds of the park and was impressed by the impeccable landscaping throughout. Page 23 Overall, the Hovley Park is a clean, well maintained, and useful park that our city can be proud of. Page 24 Joe Mann Park Committee member Paul Murphy I made three visits to this park, and I have to say that I was very pleased with the condition of the park. The people doing the maintenance and upkeep of the park are doing a fabulous job, the improvement over the last time that I was responsible for a report on this park is amazing. The number of visitors to this park was somewhat more than I ran into when I was responsible for a report. There are quite a few mothers and their children that frequent this park on a regular basis. The park is kind of a gathering spot for the neighborhood in general. A ran into a young man who worked at the golf course and was raised in the neighborhood, he also belonged to the Palm Desert Historical Society. He took great pride in the condition of the park and made a point of telling me that anytime he saw people leave trash in the park he made a point of asking them to pick up their trash and put it into one of the trash containers. He said his efforts had made a real dent in the amount of trash on the grounds. I have to say he was certainly correct; it would be nice if we had people like him visiting all the parks.
