SUBJECT: RELINQUISHMENT BY CALTRANS OF HIGHWAY 111 TO THE CITY OF
PALM DESERT
DATE: March 11, 1993
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize staff to negotiate with representatives of Caltrans
for the turnback of Highway 111 from the Rancho Mirage city
boundary to Highway 74 to the City of Palm Desert.
BACKGROUND:
A couple of years ago, Caltrans ' staff approached us about
taking back Highway 111 from Highway 74 westerly to the Rancho
Mirage city limits .
City staff have been in contact with staff of the Cities of
Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, and Palm Springs regarding their
consideration of the situation. It appears that Rancho Mirage and
Cathedral City would look favorably upon this idea; however, the
City of Palm Springs staff have some concerns that could be
mitigated by Caltrans . Prior to the City Council meeting, contact
will be made with the County of Riverside with regard to their
thoughts on the matter in the unincorporated area northwest of Palm
Springs .
Staff recommends that the City Council approve of staff
holding a meeting with representatives from Caltrans, as well as
the above-mentioned cities, to discuss this matter and determine
the advantages, as well as disadvantages .
