STAFF REPORT
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: DONNA GOMEZ, VISITOR CENTER MANAGER
DATE: JUNE 12, 2003
SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR INCREASE IN VISITOR CENTER PETTY CASH
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve a$150.00 increase in the Petty Cash fund for the Visitor Information
Center as administered by the Visitor Center Manager.
Summary:
The Palm Desert Visitor Information Center was established under the administration of the City
of Palm Desert almost five years ago. At that time, a petty cash fund was established at an
amount of$300.00. This allowed for$150.00 for the cash register drawer for sales purposes and
$150.00 to be used for daily petty cash expenses.
Since that time, the Visitor Center has increased its gross sales to over$50,000 a year. This
alone has placed additional demands on our cash drawer with staff sometimes struggling to make
change for large bills and travelers checks. Additionally, the Manager has assumed
responsibility for administering the City's Sister Cities program. This program has created an
additional need for petty cash purchases due to its projects and activities being implemented on a
daily basis.
Therefore, it is the request of this department that the Visitor Information Center petty cash
account be increased by$150.00 to allow for adequate coverage of its cash drawer and its daily
petty cash expenditures.
