HomeMy WebLinkAboutCompressed Natural Gas Vehicle Update INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
CITY OF PALM DESERT
TO: City Council and City Manager
FROM: Richard J. Folkers, Assistant City Manager/
Public Works Director
SUBJECT: INFORMATIONAL ITEM - COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS VEHICLE
UPDATE
DATE: October 27 , 1994
The city has been operating three pickup trucks on compressed
natural gas (CNG) for the past six months and the overall results
are very good.
The fuel economy is slightly less than 16 miles per gallon which is
very comparable to our gasoline operated vehicles driven under
similar circumstances . The CNG fuels costs are $0 . 72 - 0 . 75 per
gallon and represents a 20-25 percent savings over gasoline.
The slight loss of power and performance appears not to be a
problem with the drivers, and other than a few minor technical
glitches at first, the vehicles operate extremely well on CNG.
The only single drawback at this point is having only one CNG
refueling station in the area, however, our drivers have adopted
and plan for refueling as part of their routine.
