Gaugush, Director of Public Works/City Engineer DATE: June 13, 2002 CONTENTS: Photos (3) Executive Summary: At the December 13, 2001, City Council Meeting, the aesthetics of the complete skirts on the palm trees in the Oasis Circle at Desert Willow was discussed. At that time a majority of the Palms had complete skirts (bottom of crown to soil surface). The oasis landscape was designed around a natural palm oasis theme. As a result, the existing palms were brought in. The decision was made by Council to wait until June 2002 to reevaluate the aesthetics of the palms. Attached are current photos of the palms. At this time all of the palms appear to be establishing new growth. Staff expects that during this growing season the palms will continue to fill out their heads with fronds, thus completing the aesthetic look of a natural palm oasis. Over the past six months, staff has received complaints regarding the unkempt appearance of the completely skirted palms. Also, there is a potential for increased rodent, bird and insect activity, as a result of the additional nesting areas created by the skirt. An alternative pruning style that will create a cleaner more kept look but also lend a natural look is to "beard" the palms (see attachment photos). Bearding removes the lower portion of the skirt leaving a cluster of old fronds below the crown of the palm. Staff Report Oasis Circle at Desert Willow June 13, 2002 Page 2 Submitted B : H.
