Wednesday, March 8 - Friday, March 10, 1995
When many people talk about southern California, they mean "Los Angeles" -- the big city,
traffic, lush lawns, brimming swimming pools. But much of the southern part of the state is
an arid desert, brought to life by the intricate California water system and the Colorado
River. Southern California includes the vast agricultural lands of the Imperial Valley, home
of the carrot capitol of the world, and the garden and orchard crops of San Diego County
as well as expanding cities.
The Water Education Foundation's Southern California Tour contrasts the urban and
agricultural uses of water, and examines the needs and perspectives of the south state.
We will compare the Colorado River system, beginning with the magnificent Hoover Dam,
to the State Water Project and the Central Valley Project.
The tour is sponsored by the Water Education Foundation in cooperation with Imperial
Irrigation District, San Diego County Water Authority and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation,
with assistance from California Farm Bureau Federation, Metropolitan Water District of
Southern California and the University of California Cooperative Extension.
The tour begins at the Emerald Springs Holiday Inn in Las Vegas at 7:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, March 8 and ends at the San Diego airport (Lindbergh Field) on Friday,
March 10. Unlike other WEF tours, this tour will not begin nor will it end in
Sacramento.
Tour participants are responsible for their transportation to Las Vegas and home from San
Diego. Seats will be on a "first available" basis. Travel will be on air-conditioned
buses equipped with video monitors and restrooms.
For those who wish to arrive in Las Vegas on Tuesday, March 7 (the night before the tour
begins), the Emerald Springs Holiday Inn is holding a limited number of rooms for our
group at $89 a night. To reserve a room, call the hotel at 1-800-732-7889 before Feb. 10
to get the special $89 rate and mention that you are with the Water Education Foundation
tour group. Tuesday night is not included in the cost of the tour.
The registration fee includes meals and single or double-occupancy motel rooms on
Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Holiday Inn in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and the
