HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 90-17 Street Name Change Portola Avenue E Hwy 74 to Indian Hills Way e ! INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: City Council and City Manager FROM: Richard J. Folkers, Assistant City Manager/Public Works Director SUBJECT: PUBLIC HEARING FOR STREET NAME CHANGE FOR A SECTION OF PORTOLA AVENUE DATE: February 8, 1990 RECOMMENDATION: Waive further reading and adopt Resolution No. 9 0-17 approving a street name change for the section of Portola Avenue that dead ends 2,000 feet east of Highway 74 to Indian Hills Way. BACKGROUND: An existing section of Portola Avenue dead ends 2,000 feet east of Highway 74. The Public Works Department received a letter from the Indian Hills Homeowners Association concerning, "The extreme confusion and misdirected flow of traffic caused by the name Portola Avenue for the short section of roadway running east from Highway 74." This section of Portola Avenue is misleading and causes motorists, including commercial vehicles, to believe that it is a through extension of the north-south Portola Avenue that dead ends at the Ironwood Country Club at Mesa View Drive. Additionally, many road maps depict this as a through street. The two sections of Portola Avenue will never connect, and increased development in this area will add to the misdirected traffic, safety, and confusion. Homeowners and the developer adjacent to this section of Portola Avenue have no objections to the name change. As a result of the above-mentioned facts and concerns, the Public Works Department recommends that the City Council adopt the attached resolution approving a street name change for the section of Portola Avenue that dead ends 2,000 feet east of Highway 74 to Indian Hills Way.
