HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 90-3 Street Name Change Portola Ave St Name E Hwy 74 INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council and City Manager
FROM: Richard J. Folkers, Assistant City Manager/Public Works Director
SUBJECT: STREET NAME CHANGE FOR A SECTION OF PORTOLA AVENUE
DATE: January 11 , 1990
RECOMMENDATION:
Waive further reading and adopt Resolution No. 90-3 setting a public
hearing to consider a street name change for a section of Portola Avenue that
dead ends 2,000 feet east of Highway 74.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Works Department received a letter from the Indian Hills
Homeowners Association concerning "the extreme confusion and misdirected flow of
traffic caused by the name Portola Avenue for the short section of roadway
running east from Highway 74." (See Exhibit "A". )
In reviewing the situation, Public Works staff agrees that this section of
Portola Avenue, approximately 2,000 feet long, is misleading and causes many
motorists, including commercial vehicles, to mistakenly believe that it is a
through extension of the north-south Portola Avenue that dead ends at the
Ironwood Country Club near Mesa View Drive.
The two sections of Portola Avenue will never be connected, and increased
development in this area will only further add to the confusion, traffic flow,
and safety.
The Indian Hills Homeowners Association has contacted the Hayhoe Company,
who is developing the property on the south side of the street, and they have no
objection to a name change.
As a result of the above-mentioned concerns, Public Works staff recommends
that the section of Portola Avenue that extends eastward from Highway 74 and dead
ends be renamed INDIAN HILLS WAY.
