HomeMy WebLinkAboutBetty Shoe Boutique Signage MEMORANDUM City of Palm Desert TO: City Manager and City Council FRCM: Assistant City Manager/Director of Community Development DATE: October 12, 1989 SUBJECT: Betty's Shoe Boutique Sign Call-Up As council will recall, staff approved an internally lit can sign for Betty's Shoe Boutique located at 72-785 Highway 111. The sign letters were rust colored with a background of ivory. It was determined that a mistake had been made and staff should not have approved the sign and, subsequently, the sign was taken to the architectural review commission. At its meeting of September 12, the architectural review commission by a vote of 3-2 (minutes attached) approved the signage in question. The decision was then called up for review by Councilman Crites on the grounds that the sign was unsuitable in the present location because of inoompatibility with existing signage at the center. Council should note that if the decision of the architectural review commission is reversed and the sign is disapproved, the applicant should be reimbursed his expenses for erecting the signage. (Such amount to be determined. ) It should also be noted that along this portion of the Palms to Pines center facing Plaza Way, that none of the stores have internally lit can signs. That while the signs may differentiate in color and letter style, the signs are generally wooden signs with letters routed. If council should find that this sign is incompatible with the area, then it should reverse the architectural review commission decision. If it is the conclusion that the sign in question is compatible with existing signage, then the camtission decision should be upheld. RAMON .
