C1 RESOLUTION NO. 1997-22 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BRUNO OBJECTING TO i PIE SALE OF GASOLINE PRODUCTS CONTAINING METHYL TERTIARY BUTYL ETHER(MTBE) WHEREAS, methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE), a gasoline additive, spreads rapidly through water and poses a threat to water supplies in California; WHEREAS,MTBE has been detected in California groundwater and reservoirs; WHEREAS, MTBL is found to be a cancer and health risk; WHEREAS,the City of San Bruno relies upon local groundwater supplies in addition to watersheds and reservoirs in other parts of the state to provide water to its citizens; WHEREAS,while no detectable levels of MTBE have been measured in San Bruno groundwater to date, the continued use of MTBE in gasoline products appears to threaten the integrity of water provided to San Bruno residents and to pose a serious threat to the public health and safety; WI.IEREAS, in accordance with Government Code Section 54954.2 (b)(2), this Council unanimously finds that there is a need to take immediate action in the form of this resolution,that the need for this action came to the attention of the City of San Bruno subsequent to the posting of the agenda for its April 14, 1997 meeting, and that such action is necessitated by the serious threat to public health posed.by MTBE and a desire to provide support for pending California Senate Bill No. 521. • NOW,'1'LU REFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of San Bruno that it supports Senate Bill No. 521 and urges the State Legislature to prohibit the use of 1 MTBE in gasoline products.
