Recommendation By Minute Motion, direct staff to proceed with font option 2 as outlined in the aesthetic enhancements signage proposal for the Portola 1-10 Interchange Project. Strategic Plan Obiective While approval of aesthetic enhancements for the Portola 1-10 Interchange Project does not have a direct link to the City's 2013-2033 Strategic Plan, Envision Palm Desert — Forward Together, the project does address the following Tourism and Marketing priorities: • Priority 1: Improve access to Palm Desert and its attractions to enhance the ease of lifestyle. • Priority 4: Support the city's tourism industry through enhancement of its marketing efforts with an allocation of additional city resources, the development of partnerships, and coordination of existing efforts. Discussion At its meeting of June 13, 2019, the City Council appointed then Council Member Kathleen Kelly and Council Member Jan Harnik to serve on the Portola Interchange Aesthetic Treatment subcommittee. The subcommittee met on several occasions to review conceptual designs including large-scale public art and bridge aesthetics. The subcommittee initially focused a great deal on large-scale public art designs that could be incorporated into the bridge design. However, it was determined that project deadlines severely limited the ability to incorporate art in a meaningful way. As such, the subcommittee concurred that working with an artist on aesthetic enhancements (i.e. signage) on the bridge would be a more viable and elegant approach. In an effort to retain a location where a future public art project could be located, the construction plans will identify an area within the westbound onramp for this purpose. February 13, 2020 - Staff Report Portola 1-10 Interchange Project Aesthetic Enhancements Page 2 of 2 Attached is the signage proposal from artist Phillip K. Smith III that includes three (3) font options for the bridge. The fonts selected were intended to be clean, modern, and timeless. The material will be rusted corten steel and the letters will be backlit with white LED lighting. Upon review of the three (3) fonts, staff recommends selection of font option 2, as the scale and design of the font are complementary both day and night. Fiscal Analysis There is no fiscal impact to the General Fund associated with this request as funding for the bridge aesthetics will be paid for by the Portola 1-10 Interchange Capital Project.
