REQUEST: Request for Ratification to Approve the Amount of $4,325 In Police
Contingency Funds for Program Supplies for School Resource Officers
DATE: October 11, 2001
Recommendation: By Minute Motion, ratify the authorization of $4,325 in Police
Contingency Funds for program supplies.
Executive Summary:
The City of Palm Desert has dedicated School Resource Officers (SRO) assigned to
their public schools to provide security and operate public safety programs. The SRO
assigned to the Palm Desert Middle School (PDMS) conducts several public safety
programs throughout the year for PDMS as well as for the elementary schools in the
City. The SRO utilizes handout material such as coloring books, stickers, and safety
equipment to deliver the public safety messages presented in her programs. Two of the
annual programs that the PDMS SRO operates are the Halloween Safety Program and
the Bike Safety Program. The Halloween Safety Program discusses night safety and
proper treat inspection. The Bike Safety Program discusses traffic safety and proper
safety equipment. Each year school children are injured in tragic accidents during
Halloween and while commuting to and from school on bicycles. These items will be
utilized as learning tools to make our children more safety conscious.
Discussion:
The Palm Desert Police Department has requested approval to purchase the following
items for the SRO to use during the above-mentioned safety programs. The requested
surplus of safety program materials should support the program for the next two years.
These items are necessary to allow our SRO to provide programs that are fun with a
very important message. These items will also assist our SRO in developing a better
rapport with the students, which enhances her ability to deliver her public safety
messages. Our goal is to provide the best possible service to the City of Palm Desert
and to keep the City informed of our efforts to maintain a safe and healthy community.
