HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrganizing and Production of Neighborhood Block Party Program FY 2000 -2001 CITY OF PALM DESERT MEMORANDUM To: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council From: Captain Patrick McManus Palm Desert Police Chief Pat Scully Community Affairs Specialist Date: December 14, 2000 Re: BLOCK PARTY PROGRAM Recommendation: By Minute Motion, endorse this program and direct appropriate staff to move forward in organizing and producing block parties in neighborhoods throughout the City of Palm Desert and make funding in an amount not to exceed$5,000 for fiscal year 2000/01 available through account 110-414-4416- 3061. Background: At its meeting of October 16,2000,the Public Safety Commission voted to recommend to the City Council that a Block Party program be implemented and funded for activities to be held in communities throughout Palm Desert. To enable the communities throughout Palm Desert to participate in public safety programs, staff recommends that this program be organized and produced in an amount not to exceed$5,000 for the remainder of this fiscal year. These block parties would allow neighbors to gather and meet each other in a sponsored setting, provide residents with emergency and fire preparedness training, implement and sustain neighborhood watch programs, and provide an opportunity for community members to become familiar with various City and public safety officials and learn what services and programs are available. Future funding would be included in the annual special events budget approved by the City Council. Advertising the program through local media would be used to promote it,and an application similar to the one attached would be developed so that specific programs would be developed to meet the needs and interests of each block. Staff also recommends that a committee be formed consisting of a citizen representative from the block being targeted, City staff, and police and fire department staff to organize individual events. The culmination of the various block parties would be the already Council approved Palm Desert Public Safety Appreciation Day, which is scheduled to be held on the first Wednesday of November each year. Staff recommends that the City Council endorse this program and recommend its implementation to with current and future funding made available through account 110-414-4416-3061.
