J Y----` VERIFIED B`l: G %/` -- Original on 4.w La Li - jerk s As in the past, the Martin Luther King Commemoration Committee, composed of a coalition of civic, educational, fraternal and religious organizations, is developing a program to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program will take place on Sunday January 15, 1989 at 2:30 D.M. at Temple Isaiah, 332 West Alejo Road, Palm Springs. We shall once again raise our voices in unison, with the help of the joyous sounds from choirs and indi- viduals, to honor this great American. Cities of the Coachella Valley are again expected to sign proclamations and send representatives to the gathering, and we invite you and your City Council to participate in this special event by attending and/or by asking your governing body to allow its name to be placed on our program under a special heading titled "Supporters" so that we may all show our appreciation for this unique American and his efforts on behalf of the civil rights of all people. In addition to the above, we are asking that you and your City Council decree the closing of city offices in observance of this most worthy National Holiday. Several cities of the Coachella Valley have already done so, and will close their offices on the third Monday of January, i.e. January 16, 1989. We are aware that granting the day off for employees may cause a dent in the city's budget, but greatly feel, and hope you and your City Council members share the belief, that the significance of theHoliday overrides any negative considera- tion -- so very strong is the sentiment for Dr. King and all that he stood for, not only in our cities, states and nation, but throughout the world. We urge you and your official colleagues to favorably consider our request to close your offices on January 16. Enclosed is a sample proclamation for your consideration, approval and action. Please contact us by phone as soon as convenient (327 4983 or 327 4295), or in writing, to indicate your response for celebrating in an optimum way this most memorable and important event.
