HomeMy WebLinkAboutAddress Program for Palm Desert CITY OF PALM DESERT
Interoffice Memorandum
TO: Mayor Snyder and City Council Members
FROM: Pat Conlon, Director of Building & Safety
SUBJECT: ADDRESS PROGRAM FOR PALM DESERT
DATE: January 10, 1991
Currently, the city staff, in conjunction with the Palm Desert Chamber of
Commerce, is in the process of developing a program which will help make
business addresses both on El Paseo and Highway 111 more visible to the
public.
Two avenues of approach are being considered:
1) Block Identification. Per the recommendation of the Chamber of
Commerce and the Director of Public Works, block identification
signs will be used at intersections helping to advise motorists on
the starting address of the upcoming business block. Mr. Folkers
will be happy to report to the city council, the specifics of this
program.
2) Enhanced Building Addresses. Currently, the Palm Desert Municipal
Code requires commercial address numbers to be a minimum of 7" in
size and placed on a contrasting background which is to be visible
from the public right of way. One of the current problems for
buildings on El Paseo is the fact that the required address
numbers are placed in a location where the motorist driving down
El Paseo cannot see them. In several cases on El Paseo the
building addresses are placed at or near the top of the buildings,
making visibility next to impossible (unless the motorist is
driving a convertible and happens to look straight up) .
While the above numbers conform to the letter of the Palm Desert Municipal
Code, they do not conform with the intent.
The Palm Desert Building Inspectors and the Fire Marshal Inspectors will be
notifying building owners of the poor visibility conditions of their
respective building addresses.
Another area of concern is that the individual tenants within the buildings
have displayed, in inconspicuous locations, the space number or suite
numbers of their tenant spaces. The city inspection staff will be working
also with those tenants to relieve this condition.
The Chamber of Commerce is not recommending, at this time, a formal
ordinance be drafted requiring changing of addresses for non-conforming
buildings.
