Folkers , Assistant City Manager/Public Works Director SUBJECT: PORTOLA AVENUE AND ALESSANDRO DRIVE INTERSECTION MODIFICATION DATE : April 11, 1996 RECOMMENDATION: Install a temporary median barrier on Portola Avenue at Alessandro Drive to allow north/south left turn movements and to prohibit east/west through movements in the intersection. BACKGROUND: The Portola Avenue and Alessandro Drive intersection has had the highest number of accidents within the City, excluding Highway 111 . There have been 28 collisions in the last 51 years in this intersection with the majority of the accidents involving right angle movements . With the City' s concern for public safety, the Portola Avenue and Alessandro Drive intersection and accident history was discussed at the March 20, 1996 Technical Traffic Committee meeting. Committee members agreed that this intersection should be modified to improve safety. The Technical Traffic Committee recommended that east/west movements should be prohibited across the intersection, but north/south left turns should be allowed. Concurring with the Technical Traffic Committee ' s recommendation, staff recommends that temporary improvements be installed as discussed above, as soon as possible, for a six-month evaluation with permanent improvements to follow.
