HomeMy WebLinkAboutStreet Closure for CVRPD 5K Conjunction of Senior Olympics IND CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION to close El Paseo on February 21 and 23, 2003 DATE: September 12, 2002 CONTENTS: Correspondence Business Support Manager Recommendation: By Minute Motion, authorize the Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District (CVRPD) to close El Paseo from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on February 21 and 23, 2003, to stage a 5K and 10K Run, respectively, as an activity in conjunction with the third annual Palm Desert Games, a sanctioned Senior Olympics event. Executive Summary: For the past two years the CVRPD has produced the Palm Desert Games, a sanctioned Senior Olympics event, which stages a variety of competitive sports activities at various venues in the City for seniors who continue to be active athletically. Background: The CVRPD has requested that El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Ocotillo be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on February 21 and 23, 2003, to stage a 5K and 10K runs, respectively, in conjunction with organized activities being held as part of the third annual Palm Desert Games, a sanctioned Senior Olympics event. Prior to meeting with representatives of the City's Public Works Department, Fire Department, and Police Department to address any concerns with regard to public safety, event organizers met with the El Paseo Business M M Association and received their endorsement of this activity along with their approval to close the street between Prickly Pear and Ocotillo for a three and a half hour period. Residential areas located off of El Paseo will not be affected and event organizers will route the run to avoid interfering with normally scheduled activities. Staff recommends approval of this event sponsored and produced by the CVRPD on February 21 and 23, 2003, and authorize the closure of El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Oc illo from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. both days. The Palm Desert Senior Games has asked that the street be closed from 5:00am to 8:30am on both Friday February 21 , 2003 and Sunday February 23, 2003 for the event. With the exception of several restaurants that may be open for breakfast, but will have access to parking lots, merchants will not be open.
