Background:
Last year the Coachella Valley Recreation & Parks District assumed responsibility for
organizing and producing the regional Senior Olympic Games; one of 13 throughout the
State of California. The second Palm Desert Games are scheduled to be held at various
venues throughout the City, April 4 through April 21 , 2002. Activities will include ballroom
dancing, swimming, golf, track & field, tennis, volleyball, race/walk, softball, bowling, and
lawn bowling. Hosting the regional games will provide a great deal of visibility to Palm
Desert as they will be attended by individuals from throughout the country. Last year's
games even attracted two international visitors to the desert. Based on last year's
attendance and the interest demonstrated by its participants in returning to Palm Desert,
it is anticipated that this year's games will enjoy the highest attendance of any regional
games in the State of California. In addition upon completion of the 2002 Regional
Games, Palm Desert will become eligible to host the State games which will attract an even
broader audience to the City.

C. PALM DESERT GAMES
Rec: By Minute Motion, endorse the concept of the Palm Desert Games,
a regional event sanctioned by the Senior Olympics Committee, and
support this event financially in an amount not to exceed $20,000 to
be appropriated through the unobligated general fund.
Ms. Scully introduced Kevin Kalman from the Coachella Valley Recreation
and Park District. Mr. Kalman coordinates the games which are sponsored
jointly by the Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District and the City of
Palm Desert. The request is for approval to recommend to the City Council
the amount of $20,000 to be taken from the unobligated general fund.
Mr. Kalman indicated that last year was the First Annual Palm Desert Senior
Games with approximately 633 athletes participating. In the first year, we
became the third largest senior games event in the state of California out of
the thirteen active games. It is expected that after this year we will be at
number one or two, and hopefully be number one in the future. This year it
is expected that 1500-2000 athletes will participate. Local participation last
year was 158; 475 of the athletes traveled from out of the area to participate,
with 122 out-of-state participants representing seventeen different states,
and two international. Last year was a success, with golf, tennis, swimming,
track and field, lawn bowling, basketball, volleyball, softball, 5-K and 10-K
road races, race/walking and other social events. This year bowling will be
added with everything else relatively the same. Last year Del Webb was
used for golf; this year it will be at Desert Willow. There will be
advertisement in several national magazines and a direct mail campaign.
Event Dates: April 4-21 , 2002.
The City of Palm Desert will be the presenting sponsor.
Motion by Member Paparian to support and recommend to the City
