INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council and City Manager
FROM: Richard J. Folkers, Assistant City Manager/Public Works Director
SUBJECT: INFORMATIONAL ITEM — WASHINGTON STREET WIDENING
(PROJECT 645-98)
DATE: October 14, 1999
The preconstruction meeting for the Washington Street widening project between Miles
Avenue and Country Club Drive was held at 9:00 a.m. on October 5, 1999, in the Palm
Desert Administrative Conference Room. The contractor, Granite Construction Company,
was low bidder at a bid amount of $3,047,745, and the contract was awarded by the Board
of Supervisors on September 21, 1999.
The County of Riverside will issue the notice to proceed very soon, and it is anticipated
that the contractor should be working by the middle of October. Although the number of
working days is 100 days, the contractor has indicated that with temporary or local
agencies and the availability of restricted traffic to one lane in each direction that could
reduce the number of working days to sixty or seventy.
Public Works staff will be working with the contractor and the County of Riverside, as well
as the Cities of La Quinta and Indian Wells, to minimize the disruption of traffic while
accelerating the project as much as possible. The intent is to have the work completed
prior to the opening of the Indians Wells Tennis Gardens in March 2000.
