Home My WebLink AboutAppointments Palm Desert Youth Committee r ' CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPOINTMENT OF PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE DATE: FEBRUARY 13, 2003 CONTENTS: SUBJECT APPLICATIONS Recommendation: By Minute Motion, appoint Michelle Stein, Courtney Lingle, Kayleigh Hyde and Erika McQuillen to the Palm Desert Youth Committee. Executive Summary: Last year the City Council requested that the feasibility of forming a Palm Desert Youth Committee be investigated to provide an opportunity for the City's youth to become firmly involved, in an advisory capacity, in a variety of issues that affect their daily lives. Pertinent research has now been completed and applications for membership on this committee have been accepted. Background: For the past year staff has been researching the structure and effectiveness of a variety of youth committees/commissions throughout the State of California. The results of this research indicate that such bodies have been used in an advisory capacity to local legislators for periods of time of between thirty years to six months. The scope of responsibility that these committees/commissions have been charged with ranges from planning a single annual event to providing the councils that they advise with input on issues that include recreational facilities and programs, transportation, public safety programs, regional concerns, local legislation, advertising and promotion, cultural outreach, a wide variety of special events, historical preservation, educational facility and program needs, environmental issues, anti-drug and smoking programs, etc. Some entities involve their youth committee/commissions to the extent that active member participation in other advisory bodies throughout their jurisdiction is sought when needed and appropriate. After staff made presentations to various youth groups throughout the community,the attached applications have been received for membership in the Palm Desert Youth Committee. Michelle Stein, Courtney Lingle, Kayleigh Hyde, and Erika McQuillen have all expressed interest in serving on this committee for the established period of one year. All applicants possess the leadership skills and qualities that the City of Palm Desert seeks in this regard.
