HomeMy WebLinkAboutRelocation of Water Utilities by CWVD Fred Waring Drive Widening CITY OF PALM DESERT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPROVAL OF EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE RELOCATION OF WATER UTILITIES BY THE COACHELLA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT FOR THE FRED WARING DRIVE WIDENING PROJECT FROM SAN PASCUAL AVENUE TO DEEP CANYON ROAD SUBMITTED BY: LAURI AYLAIAN, PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR DATE: MAY 23, 2002 Recommendation: That the City Council, by Minute Motion, approve expenses in an amount not to exceed $62,370 for the relocation of water utilities by the Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD)for the Fred Waring Widening Project from San Pascual Avenue to Deep Canyon Road. Executive Summary: Approval of staffs recommendation will allow the City to reimburse CVWD to disconnect thirty-five (35) water services and relocate eight (8) fire hydrants and one (1) detector check to provide for the widening of Fred Waring Drive, between San Pascual Avenue and Deep Canyon Road. Rejection of staffs recommendation would impede or delay the roadway construction project. Discussion: In preparation for the widening of Fred Waring Drive between San Pascual Avenue and Deep Canyon Road thirty-five (35) residential units were acquired and demolished. Each of the thirty-five (35) dwellings had a water service that was tied into CVWD's main water line in Fred Waring Drive. There were also eight (8) fire hydrants serving to provide fire protection in that area, and a single detector check that was located in an area that will be within the widened footprint of the road when work is completed. To disconnect and relocate these services, the CVWD has notified the City that the cost of their work will be $300 for each of the thirty-five (35) water services that must be capped at the water main, plus up to $51,870 to extend six (6) hydrants, remove and relocate two (2) hydrants, and G:\RDA\DBradley\Laylaian\Fred Waring\cvwdwateruti Iwpd • Staff Report CVWD Water Utility Expenses - Fred Waring Drive Page 2 of 2 May 23, 2002 relocate the detector check. The total cost of the work described herein will not exceed $62,370. Staff requests that the City Council authorize reimbursement of CVWD for this work after the work has been performed. Funding for this work has been appropriated in the current fiscal year 2001/2002 Capital Improvement Project budget for the widening of Fred Waring Drive (Account No. 400-4384-433-4001).
