Background: At its meeting of April 21, 1999,the Palm Desert Public Safety Commission recommended that the City Council approve a fee waiver and provide appropriate publicity to notify the community of the Fourth Annual Riverside County Sheriffs Department Canine Competition. The Riverside County Sheriffs Department sponsors this annual two day event, which features approximately 50 canine handlers from throughout California and Oregon. In 1999 Palm Desert will host this event, and its organizers have requested the use of a portion of the Palm Desert Civic Center Park. This activity will be open to the public free of charge and would provide an opportunity for Palm Desert residents to educate themselves regarding the service that police service dogs provide in fighting crime. Staff recommends that the City Council waive any attendant fees in producing this event and instruct staff to work with event organizers to ensure that this activity is a success.
