Bell Tower • I .N11111 MEMORANDUM CITY OF PALM DESERT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Philip Drell , Associate Planner DATE: December 19, 1985 SUBJECT: Twenty four foot bell tower for Newman Center remodel at southwest corner of Fred Waring and San Pablo. The proposed Newman Center remodel at the southwest corner of Fred Waring Drive and San Pablo Avenue includes a 24 foot high mission style bell tower/parapet. The maximum height within the R-2 S.P. zone is 18 feet. Section 25.56.300 of the zoning ordinance allows heights above the 18 foot maximum for special architectural features. The city council had requested that all height exception requests be brought before them for review. The proposed bell tower/parapet was reviewed and endorsed by the architectural commission. The height of the civic center council chamber on the diagonal corner is 28 feet. The entire Fred Waring frontage between San Pablo and Monterey is planned for Office Professional zoning. The bell tower/parapet would conform to the proposed office professional height standards. RECOMMENDATION: By minute motion approve height exception for Newman Center bell tower/parapet.
