INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
CITY OF PALM DESERT
DATE : JULY 14, 1994
TO: CITY MANAGER, HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL
FROM: ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER
SUBJECT: BROADCASTING COUNCIL MEETINGS BY COLONY CABLEVISION
Recommendation:
That the City Council permit Colony Cablevision to televise special
City events, but not broadcast live City Council meetings .
Background:
The City' s cable television franchise with Colony CableVision makes
certain requirements on Colony for the provision of a governmental
(PEG) access channel ( s) -- the provision of a studio, equipment,
and training for those that may be interested in using the access
channel .
At the May 26 City Council meeting, we inquired whether there was
sufficient interest to broadcast the City Council meetings , but
the Council ' s pleasure was not to televise the meetings at this
time .
However, we recommend that Colony tape and broadcast specific town
hall meetings, and meetings that we set up with community groups
from time to time wherein we provide information. I specifically
mentioned the meetings that we would be holding with Palm Desert
Country Club residents to explain how the City functions and the
benefits of annexation.
In this regard, we should encourage that Colony ake available
these meetings through the use of the Community A ss Channel .
