More kids running out in the street, more parents getting upset by other drivers cutting them off or jumping the line. This means there are areas you might want to avoid so you don’t get stuck in traffic and areas where your presence can be of assistance. One area you might want to avoid, especially if you are responding to an incidenct where your presence is needed, is Cook Street and Aztec. It can take you ten minutes to get through there. An area where your presence would be appreciated is on Lantana Way just east of George Washington Charter School. Lt Dave MacFarlane oftens goes there at the start of his patrol. Just seeing a COP there helps to keep a more orderly decorum from the parents. Just remember, we are non-confrontational, so keep to gentle reminders to those not using the crosswalks. As a side note, the crosswalk at Peppergrass Street and Lantana Way is know as the Dave MacFarlane crosswalk. Dave saw a need for a marked crosswalk there and requested the city install one. The city reviewed the situation and agreed with Dave that one was needed and put one in. This is a great example of how the COPs Program can have a positive impact on the safety of Palm Desert residents. WE’RE BACK! Welcome back to all of our members that are here in town. We also look forward to all our out of town members returning soon. Our first meeting is September 10th in the Administrative Conference Room (same place as usual). For those of you who aren’t back or can’t make the meeting, it will be recorded on Zoom. Our training this month will be a presentation on fraud, given by Liz Martinez, from the Sheriff’s Department’s C.A.R.E. Team. The Sheriff Department has been getting a lot of calls about people getting ripped off from very talented people on the phone who tell the elderly about a deal or they owe something. They then give them their name and accounts numbers or control of their computers. Do not give out any information over the telephone. THE KIDS ARE BACK ALSO! 46 Public Safety Committee Meeting FALL COPS SOIREE VOLUME 16, ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2024 WHAT: An opportunity for COPs to gather and share their adventures on patrol, their ideas, and have convivial conversation with other COPs. WHEN: September 19th, Thursday, 1600-1800 hours WHERE: Dave’s apartment, Avenida, 40445 Portola Avenue, #100 REFRESHMENTS: Light snacks and beverages provided DRESS: Casual Attire PARKING: Street parking on Via Tuscany In August, we had two locations for Coffee with a Cop, the first one was on August 7, at Revel Senior Residence at Palm Desert. The second one was at Avenida Palm Desert, on August 13, from about 0900 to about 1100 hours. CSO Stacey Austin gave a really great prsentation on Fraud. The Sheriff Department have been getting more calls on fraud so Stacey thought it would be good to share some thoughts. Stacey said it is ok to just hang up. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. The duties of an officer are the safety, honor and welfare of your country first! George Patton 47 Public Safety Committee Meeting VOLUME 16, ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2024 Lt. MacFarlane put out an email last month on how to listen to what is being said on the radio. We all hear the radios when they are turned on, but do we really pay attention to what is being said on the radio? Try this: Next time you are out on patrol, take a half hour break and pull to the side of the road or pull into a parking lot and jot down everything you hear on the radio that you aren’t sure of. Then ask one of our COP Officers, who will gladly help you to understand it. Lets give an example: Dispatch says “2tom30, 1025, proceed to 2534 Hovely Lane, 415 in progress. So, what is that? 1025 read your computer (MDC) and 415 =Disturbing the peace. COP ANNIVERSARIES It is our members who make our program the success it is. A big thanks to the below members on their anniversaries with our program. Dave MacFarlane 12 years Tom Niehaus 3 years Steve Berger 1 year Pauline Morrisey 1 year Eric Morrisey 1 year Ruth Smith 1 year 48 Public Safety Committee Meeting Sheriff Mobile Field Enforcement Training at the Acrisure Arena Seven of our COPS (Dave, Lloyd, PJ, Lynn, Dewy, Eric, and Pauline) participated in a Sheriff training exercise that involved police agencies from all over the area. There were police officers from Banning, Indio, Thermal and Palm Desert Sheriff Stations, DA Investigators, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Border Portal and COPS from California Highway Patrol, Rancho Mirage and the Sheriff COPS. The COPS & Border Patrol were agitators who were supposed to resist the police line from getting through. They were aggressive but nice most of the time. But our cops really protested very well. They also practiced when an officer is down, how to get him/her into the back of a police car. They had two training sessions. First one took place from 0600-0800 hours, then a break, and the second one was from 0900-1100 hours. A fun day for us, but a good learning experience as well. They provided some food and water. Boy was it cold in there! No ice floor, but cold. VOLUME 16, ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2024 49 Public Safety Committee Meeting COPS Volunteer Hours Report for 2024 Month Hours Cum. VOLUME 16, ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2024 ON THE SCENE WITH THE PALM DESERT COPS This is the part of our newsletter where we post pictures of our COPs in action at traffic scenes and other incidents. We need the participation of everyone to make this happen. While you are out on patrol, if you assist at a TC or some other event, please take a picture and send it to me. There are only a few guidelines – Your first priority is to assist at the scene, pictures are a secondary item, only take pictures when it is safe to do so, and don’t enter a scene to take pictures. Most importantly, please respect the privacy of anyone involved in the incident and don’t take any pictures of them. 50 Public Safety Committee Meeting Organization Name Shared Networks Fremont CA PD
