By Minute Motion, approve an expenditure of $1,000 to assist in underwriting the first
annual Waste to Wonders Art Challenge scheduled to be held April 13, 2002, at The
Gardens on El Paseo. Funding is available in the Fiscal Year 01/02 Budget in Account
#110-4416-414-3061 and no appropriation is necessary.
Executive Summary:
The S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, in conjunction with cities throughout the Coachella Valley, is
sponsoring a Waste to Wonders Art Challenge which encourages both amateur and
professional artists to showcase their work using found and recycled materials.
Background:
Several months ago, a member of the Palm Desert Civic Arts Committee suggested that
an art challenge be developed throughout the Coachella Valley to showcase art work
created by both amateur and professional artists using found and recycled materials. Plans
have been underway since that time to organize and produce this event. Through the
S.C.R. A. P. Gallery, the cities of Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, and Indio
have made financial commitments to sponsor event has as Waste Management of the
Desert, Coca-Cola, and Palm Springs Recycling.
This request is for the City of Palm Desert to join these entities in underwriting prize money
and production costs for this contest, which is scheduled to be displayed at The Gardens
at El Paseo on April 13, 2002, and will be the beneficiary of proceeds of the concert on that
day. The exhibit will be displayed for a one month period in Cathedral City and programs
are being developed to allow schools and various other community groups to visit and
enjoy the exhibit at no charge.

Because the City of Palm Desert has participated in the organization and production and
supports the efforts of the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery in its mission to make use of recycled
materials, staff recommends that $1,000.00 be allocated to secure a sponsorship for this
program. Funds are available in Fiscal Year 01/02 from Account #110-4416-414-3061.
Therefore, no additional appropriation would be requested or is necessary.
