Recommendation:
That the City Council approve the following trail names for the Cahuilla
Hills and Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument Visitors
Center areas:
1. Hopalong Cassidy Trail
2. Gabby Hayes Trail
3. Homestead Trail
4. Randall Henderson Trail
Executive Summary/Discussion:
The Parks and Recreation Commission discussed the issue of trail names for the approved
and future Palm Desert trails at its September meeting. The trail names that were
presented for consideration included the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, the Gabby Hayes Trail,
the Homestead Trail and the Randall Henderson Trail. Each of the names has an historical
link to the area which is discussed below. The Parks and Recreation Commission
unanimously recommended approval of the proposed names to the City Council.
Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) owned a home and a hotel in Palm Desert prior to
incorporation and was a fixture at Keedy's Café every Saturday morning. He was one of
the "cowboy stars" that was part of the American Film Institutes top 100 screen
personalities of the 20`h century. The Hopalong Cassidy Trail, as proposed, will begin south
of Bighorn Country Club at the parking lot adjacent to the Art Smith Trailhead on the west
side of Highway 74 and wind its way north to ultimately tie in with the Bump and Grind Trail
in Rancho Mirage. When completed, the trail will measure approximately 7 miles in length
and will be the longest trail in Palm Desert.

George "Gabby" Hayes was also part of the American Film Institutes top 100 screen
personalities of the 20`h century and a Palm Desert resident. He was one of the "Hoppy
Team"and probably best remembered as a sidekick to Roy Rogers. It is proposed that the
connector trail out of the Cahuilla Hills Park which ties into the Hopalong Cassidy Trail be
named the Gabby Hayes Trail.
The connector trail out of Homme/Adams Park is proposed to be named the Homestead
Trail. The trail winds through the parcels that were made available as part of the
Homestead Act which helped to attract city dwellers to the desert.
The 2.8 mile loop trail adjacent to the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument
Visitor Center is proposed to be named the Randall Henderson Trail. Randall Henderson
was the founder of the Desert Protective Council and the publisher/editor of Desert
Magazine which he ran out of the building on the southeast corner of Highway 111 and El
Paseo. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Living Desert.
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the trail names as presented.
