DISCUSSION: Two vendors have participated in the Summer Concert Series. E Pels provides frozen lemonade, and Hollywood Scoop provides coffee, cold drinks, pastries and ice cream. Numerous complaints were received about the lack of available food. The Civic Arts Committee felt attendees should bring their own food and that picnics should be promoted. In reaffirming the earlier Civic Arts Committee decision to have up to four vendors, two more vendors could be considered on a first come first serve and variety basis . BOX 13970 PALM DESERT, CA 92255-3970 17/04, 4 L ASS June 14, 1995 Honorable Mayor & Members of the City Council The City of Palm Desert 73-510 Fred Waring Drive Palm Desert, California 92260 Dear Councilmembers: Soroptimist International of Palm Desert requested permission to sell hot dogs at the City's summer concert series for the remaining 1995 performances. This request was taken to the Civic Arts Committee at its meeting of June 12, 1995, and denied because the Committee did not recognize Soroptimist as a Palm Desert business and because the Committee felt it opened the door to other organizations to come in and request the same opportunity. The item did not appear on the Civic Arts Committee agenda but was added at the meeting as a late item. Soroptimist International was not notified that it would be decided at this meeting. We are respectfully requesting that the City Council approve our request based on the following: 1. While not a profit-making organization in the City of Palm Desert, this club has provided service to the community for over 30 years including support and promotion of the City's fire tax and more recently, a $50,000 commitment to the City's multi-agency library in support of the Children's Story Room. 2. We have contacted the Health Department and will be able to meet all necessary requirements to obtain a permit to sell hot dogs at these performances. 3. The Committee originally approved four slots for vendor sales at these performances. To date, only two vendors are serving lemonade and yogurt. If in fact other organizations desire the opportunity to apply for this type of vendor sale, they would have the same • Honorable Mayor & Members of the City Council Page 2 The City of Palm Desert June 14, 1995 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * opportunity as Soroptimist International of Palm Desert had in making its application. There would still be one remaining slot should the City desire to offer more sales. Thank you for your consideration in this appeal. We appreciate the opportunity to bring it before you. Sincerely, ti° BARBARA PANULLO, CHAIR WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE
