Subject: Consideration of a Request from Soroptimist International of Pain Desert r
Funding for Kleig Lights and a Shopper Hopper for the Third Annual E Pus o
Art &Wine Tour.
Date: February 11, 1999
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve the request from Soroptimist International of Palm Desert to fund the
use of a Shopper Hopper and kleig lights at a cost not to exceed $1,200 for use in its third annual
"Art& Wine Tour of El Paseo,"to be held on February 26, 1999.
Discussion:
Last year, the El Paseo Business Association, Soroptimist International of Palm Desert, and five
galleries sponsored the second annual "Art& Wine Tour of El Paseo". The event was again very
successful. This year, the City of Pam Desert is recognized as a sponsor as well. I have attached a
copy of the event flier which also lists the participating galleries.
Those attending the event will be transported along El Paseo by a Shopper Hopper. Sonia Campbell,
President of Soroptimist International of Palm Desert, has confirmed the use of this vehicle with
Sunline Transit Agency. Live Music will add to the event's activities. At each gallery, people will
be able to browse the fme art on display, sample many varieties of wine and champagne, and enjoy
appetizers provided by El Paseo's chefs. The tour of the galleries is completely self-directed, so
participants can begin at any gallery and enjoy the event at their own pace.
The El Paseo Business Association will be working with all shops to be open on Friday, February
26, 1999, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Advertisements for the event along with the utilization of

their ad agency is being funded by the Association. Soroptimist is requesting that the City be a
sponsor of this local fund raising event by funding the use of a Shopper Hopper and two kleig lights
at a cost not to exceed$1,200. All proceeds of the tour will benefit local charities through S.I. of
Palm Desert.

Dear Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
Soroptimist International of Palm Desert is producing the annual El Paseo Art and Wine tour again this

Last year you were very generous in your support of the event and certainly contributed,to a large extent,
its sncress.
We now need to ask your help again in two ways. One,grant permission and fund the extension of the
use of the Shopper Hopper from 5:00 p. m. to 8:30 p. m.,and two, grant permission and fund the use of
two Klieg light locations for a combined cost not exceed$1,200.00
The event this year will be even larger than before and we deeply appreciate you support.
Sincerely yours,
