a.. ' ' STAFF REPORT
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Tom Theobald, Maintenance Services Manager
Jeff Winklepleck, Parks and Recreation Planning Manager
Date: June 28, 2001
Subject: Request for approval to proceed with preliminary design and cost
estimate for expansion of previously approved storage building at the
Civic Center Park
I. Recommendation:
A. By minute motion, that the City Council direct staff to proceed with
preliminary design and cost estimate of the Civic Center storage building
expansion.
II. Executive Summary
This request is linked to the teen center concept for the Civic Center park. If the
teen center concept is not endorsed, this request is no longer necessary. However,
if the teen center concept is endorsed, this is the first step in proceeding with
completion of the facility.
This request is to endorse the concept of expanding the previously approved
storage building north of the existing at the Civic Center Park by 1550 square feet.
This will incorporate the existing public works satellite yard into the storage building
and create a single maintenance facility. This would then allow the existing satellite
yard to be utilized as a temporary teen center.

Civic Center Storage Building Expansion
June 28, 2001
Ill. Background:
The previously approved storage building, which will be located north of the existing
bin enclosure area along San Pablo Avenue, is approximately 1550 square feet and
will be used to store equipment which is currently housed outside at either the
corporation yard or the Civic Center satellite yard. The proposed expansion will
double the size of the building to 3110 square feet. The addition will include mens
and womens restrooms, a small equipment/tool room and a lunch room for up to 15
people. The existing satellite yard totals 950 square feet which includes
approximately 800 square feet of indoor equipment storage and a 150 square foot
lunch room. With the current parks crew of 7, this area does not adequately address
the storage, lunchroom and equipment needs. The requested expansion which will
combine the storage building and satellite yard will address these needs and will,
in turn, allow the existing satellite yard to be used as a temporary teen center.
Staff would like to proceed with the preliminary design and cost estimates for the
addition. We then return to the City Council for approval to proceed with
construction documents and bidding.
