TO: BRUCE ALTMAN
FROM: JOHN WOHLMUTH
SUBJECT: YMCA "LEND A COUNSELOR" PROGRAM ITEM #664
DATE: APRIL 4, 1990
I have reviewed the YMCA invitation to participate in the "Lend A
Counselor" program. My recommendation is to have one employee of
the City be donated for a week as YMCA Counselor to the Camp
Oakes week-long resident camp. In addition, my recommendation
for selection is as follows:
1 . Take the program to the City Council for approval (City
pays salary during week) .
2. Send a memo to all City employees describing the "Lend
A Counselor" program.
3. Have a sign-up sheet for all interested employees to
volunteer.
4. Require all voluntary employees to go through the
sixteen hour, two Saturdays training program, without
compensation.
5. Have the YMCA select the most appropriate person for a
counselor.
6. Send the City Employee to Camp Oaks the week of
June 23, 1990 to June 30, 1990.
If you have any questions, please contact me at Ext. 316.

Dear Mr. Altman:
MEETING t'ATE 5 1/of qo
As a Coachella Valley employer interested in the youth of the
community, your business is invited to participate in the Family
YMCA of the Desert's "Lend A Counselor" program!
The "Lend A Counselor" program is designed to encourage
businesses, like yours, to "lend" the YMCA a Camp Counselor for
one week of Resident Camp. By participating in the program, your
business would continue to pay the salary of the person you
"lend" as a counselor for the week.
The Family YMCA will be sending 140 children to Camp Oakes in
the San Bernardino mountains, near Big Bear, from Saturday, June
23-Saturday, June 30. Twenty five (25) volunteer counselors are
needed to serve as good role models for those campers .
Last year the Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa had
fourteen interested applicants and sent one person to join the
YMCA Camp Staff for one week at Camp Oakes .
Your business can contribute to the growth, guidance and
success of the youth in our community by selecting someone on
your staff to participate in the "Lend A Counselor" program.
Todays campers are tomorrows employees and future community
leaders !
The Family YMCA of the Desert will review all applications
and those selected will be required to attend training sessions .
These trainings will be held at times to avoid interference with
work schedules . The YMCA will make the final determination
regarding camp staff.
If you or any of your staff would like to participate in
"Lend A Counselor" program and enjoy the mountains for one week
this summer, please contact Kris Sanders at 341-YMCA.
Sincerely,
Kris Sanders,
Program Director
