At about 8:30 am, Saturday Dec. 19, the front wheel of a bicyclist in our group traveling north on Portola was caught by a problem in the pavement forcing the wheel to quickly twist, throwing the rider to the ground, breaking 8 ribs and a collar bone. I was behind him and also crashed, but was uninjured. Please see the attached photos. This problem is at Portola and Via Venezia. The lip is over an inch tall, larger than the diameter of a typical road bike tire. The injured rider, Brett Klein, is extremely experienced, and he said this was the first time he has ever crashed. He is extremely aware of bike lane use from many miles in the saddle, and having chaired the recent bike improvements for the City of Palm Springs. I'm suggesting that the city fix this specific problem soon, and also verify that similar conditions are routinely monitored and corrected in the city. A similar flaw on 111 caused me to be rear ended by a car a few years ago when my bike's wheel was caught by a lip at the gutter and I had to correct about 12" to get out of it. While I've been lucky and haven't been injured twice now due to pavement lips in Palm Desert, and Brett only has broken bones, this is quite dangerous. Brett told me that in a split second, he saw a car in his mirror and made the decision to stay in the bike lane rather than possibly be hit. Thanks for your attention, and I'm sorry to point out any extra work. Please call any time if I can help.
