REGULAR MEETING MINUTES

1. CALL TO ORDER
A Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee was called to order by Chair
Maldonado on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 8:30 a.m. in the Administrative
Conference Room, City Hall, located at 73-510 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert,
California.

4.a APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion by: Member Langford
Seconded by: Committee Member O'Donnell
Approve the Minutes of September 20, 2024.

5. ACTION CALENDAR
5.a EXPLORE COST OPTIONS FOR FENCING AROUND PLAYGROUND
EQUIPMENT AT CITY PARKS
Management Analyst Swartz provided information related to fencing around
playground equipment at Freedom Park and responded to Committee Member
inquiries.
Motion by: Committee Member O'Donnell
Seconded by: Chair Maldonado
After discussion, it was agreed to proceed with exploring cost options for fencing
around playground equipment at City parks. This will include researching various
height levels, starting with an assessment of Freedom Park.

6. INFORMATIONAL REPORTS & COMMENTS
6.a UPDATES FROM PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
6.a.1 Palm Desert Aquatic Center
Family YMCA of the Desert Executive Director Paula Simonds provided a
report and an update regarding a $50,000 grant from First Five to provide
free swimming lessons to children aged 0-5 years old. No action taken on
this item
6.a.2 First Tee - Coachella Valley
Report provided; no action taken on this item .
6.a.3 Friends of the Desert Mountains
Friends of the Desert Mountains Executive Director Tammy Martin
provided a report and an update on the annual Friends of the Desert
Mountains Connect to the Land Fundraising event taking place on
November 13, 2024, at 4 p.m.
6.b UPDATES FROM EX-OFFICIO MEMBERS
6.b.1 Family YMCA of the Desert
None.

6.b.2 Desert Recreation District
Desert Recreation District General Manager Kevin Kalman advised the
Desert Recreation District location in Palm Desert is scheduled to have a
ribbon cutting ceremony on December 7, 2024, at 10 a.m.
6.c PARKS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS
None.
6.d CITY COUNCIL LIAISON
Councilmember Trubee provided thank you cards to Committee Members on
behalf of the City Council.
6.e CITY STAFF
Recording Secretary Castellano provided information on a live, interactive
AB1234 Ethics Training session, facilitated by attorneys from Best Best & Krieger
on January 30, 2025, from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. in the Palm Desert Council
Chamber or virtually via Zoom.
