The monument width has been reduced from 5' to 3'9", and the height fran 5' to 4' . The design will be a stepped planter with a glass tile monument and bronzed stainless steel letters. Lighting will be designed to illuminate the tiles, back lighting the letters. RECOMMENDATION: Approval PD/db AGENDA ITEM NO.: IV-A-2 DATE: December 12, 1989 ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION CASE NO.: W.E. 1 APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): John Mock, 44-555 Deep Canyon Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval to install a six (6) foot high block wall, 12' from the curb LOCATION: 44-555 Deep Canyon Road ZONE: R-1 The applicant wishes to install a six (6) foot precision block wall on the front property line (12' from curb) whereas Ordinance 557 requires a minimum setback of 15' fium the curb for a 6' wall. The applicant intends to construct a circular driveway which should delete the problem of backing onto Deep Canyon and having vision obstructed by the 6' high block wall. The original request had been at 7' from the curb; however, public works advises that the property line is 12' from the curb, and therefore the closest the wall may be is 12' from the curb (i.e. on the property line) and not on public right of way. Pursuant to the ordinance, the adjacent property owners were notified by mail of the meeting. REQOTENIDATION: That the commission review the request by John Mock and determine the appropriateness of same. SS/db %tow Norge AGENDA ITEM Ni: IV-A-3 DATE: December 12, 1989 ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION IISSION CASE Ni: 1673 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): IMPERIAL SIGN (for Maurie Symonds), 46-120 Calhoun Street, Indio, CA 92201; MAURIE SYMONDS, 73-640 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of internally illuminated business identification sign LOCATION: 73-640 El Paseo ZONE: Cl The proposal is to install a wall mounted single face internally illuminated cabinet sign beneath the existing drop awning, facing El Paseo. Said sign is to be 10 feet by 2'4" and to have rust background with ivory copy reading "Maurie Symonds Fine Art Gallery". The cabinet is to be painted to match the building. The business has 65 feet of frontage on El Paseo, and accordingly may be permitted up to 57-1/2 square feet of signage. The business has an existing drop awning with the business name in eight inch letters (terra cotta background and white copy). This sign is extremely legible. The total signage for this business will be below the maximum permitted by code, however, staff feels that the additional sign is unnecessary and will detract from the appearance of the building. If it is the owner's desire to have an illuminated sign, then it is suggested that back lighting of the awning and installation of a bottom panel is preferable to installing an internally illuminated can sign. REOCMIEN ATICN: That pursuant to the provisions of Section 25.68.120 "Permitted Signs- Purpose", the request by Maurie Symonds, Case No. 1673 SA for approval of an internally illuminated can sign be denied for the following reasons: i) Installation of the additional sign will not enhance the overall appearance of the subject property ii) Installation of the additional sign will not further the goal of "minimizing visual pollution" iii) The business is presently identified by a very effective awning sign which could be illuminated in a desirable fashion r AGENDA ITEM NO.: IV-A-5 DATE: December 12, 1989 ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW C 141ISSION CASE NC).: 1644 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): RON NILES, 73-503 Highway 111, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Exposed white neon sign facing President's Plaza LOCATION: 73-703 Highway 111 ZONE: Cl On November 14, 1989, catmission approved an exposed white neon sign facing Highway 111 at this location. The applicant now seeks approval of a smaller white neon sign to be installed facing President's Plaza parking lot. The request is to install a wall mounted painted wood sign 4 feet by 5 feet. The business has 37 feet of frontage and hence the sign complies with the size limit. The sign requested has the word "Bigalow's" across the bottom in approximately 10 inch letters. The remainder of the sign is a graphic of a hamburger and a pair of laced shoes. The hamburger speaks "you called?" The basic sign is green, black background and there are splashes of red and orange in the hamburger. Project consists of three two-story contemporary flat roofed buildings arranged around a parking area. A conceptual desert landscape plan is proposed. The plan meets the basic standards of the S.I. zone. It is unclear whether the parapet walls are sufficient to screen the roof equipment.
