CITY OF PALM DESERT
MEMORANDUM
T0: ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION
FROM: PAUL SHILLCOCK, ACM/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
DATE: AUGUST 3 , 1994
SUBJECT: EL PASEO BUSINESS ASSOCIATION INPUT RE: AWNINGS
As a result of the recent controversy surrounding an awning
installed on El Paseo that differed in color from that approved
by the ARC , the E1 Paseo Business Association was requested to
provide input regarding color, materials , etc . for consideration.
This discussion was completed at a subcommittee level and
included information provided by planning department staff on the
past determinations made by the ARC .
If was the feeling of the subcommittee that the ARC has done an
excellent job to date in regulating the colors allowed and they
believe that this is reflected in attractive and appropriate
awnings throughout the City and particularly on El Paseo . They
did recommend two areas of special consideration when the ARC is
reviewing awnings in the future .
1 . They request that high gloss material not be allowed on El
Paseo . Regardless of the color chosen, they felt that a
glossy material was inagpropriate .
2 . They request that special attention be paid to the
coordination of the awning color with that of the building
on wtiich it is to be placed. It is apparent that this has
been a consideration in the past and encourage that attitude
be contiiued and receive special emphasis .
Staff assured the members that the Association would be notified
of any appeals of an ARC decision on El Paseo so that they can
revie ie ' tuation and testify if necessary.
