The meeting was called to order at 2:00 P.M. COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Vern Barton Al Cook Ron Gregory Rick Holden Bernie Leung Charles Martin STAFF PRESENT: Ramon A. Diaz Stan Sawa Steve Smith Patricia Armitage On a motion by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Gregory, the minutes of the May 10, 1983 meeting were approved as written. Motion carried 5-0-1, with Commissioner Leung abstaining. II. CASES: A. Final Plans: 1. CASE NO: 154 C APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): 7-ELEVEN, 73-800 Highway 111, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Amendment to existing sign program. LOCATION: Northeast corner of Highway 111 and San Luis Rey. ZONE: C-1, S.P. Mr. Smith indicated that the existing 7-Eleven and Chief Auto Parts stores wish to relocate the existing wall signs onto the fascia above the entries to the stores. He added that in addition, the 7-Eleven store would like to install a 1 x 3 foot "Open 24 Hours" directory sign where the present sign is located. The reason for these changes is to improve visibility from the highway and to inform the people that they are open twenty-four hours a day. Mr. Bob Weinstein, owner of the 7-Eleven store was present and indicated that he was struggling to keep his business going because people could not see the sign from the highway and they weren't aware that the store was open twenty-four hours a day. On a motion by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Cook, the amendment to the existing sign program was approved. Motion carried 5-0-1 with Commissioner Leung abstaining. - 1 - (y `} � � ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 24, 1983 2. CASE NO: 186 C APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): SANDPIPER SHOES, INC., 73-750 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA, 92260. NATURE OF PROJECT'/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Request to install exterior awning and sign. LOCATION: 73-750 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA 92260. ZONE: C-1, S.P. Mr. Smith stated that the applicant wishes to install a dark brown awning with five verticle beige stripes over the window areas of the existing store. He would also like to place a two foot ten inch by three foot eight inch wall sign to the left of the window area. Commissioner Cook asked if there would be a rigid frame to hold the whole face of the awning. Mr. Hank Stokes, owner of the store replied that there would be one. Commissioner Cook asked if there would be signage on the awning. Mr. Stokes replied that there may be a sign although it was not shown on the drawings. It could be placed on the right corner of the drop and would be about ten inches high. Commissioner Holden asked if the city still imposed conditions on the upkeep of the awnings. Mr. Diaz replied that a store of that quality would not want their awning to deteriorate. Mr. Stokes indicated that as the owner he was skeptical about the awning but he was assured it would last. He agreed with Mr. Diaz, that they would want the awning to look tidy at all times. Commissioner Martin asked how long the awning would be guaranteed for. Mr. Stokes replied that it would be guaranteed for five years but would be replaced sooner if necessary. On a motion by Mr. Holden, seconded by Mr. Cook, the exterior awning and sign was approved. Motion carried 6-0. B. Preliminary Plans: 1. CASE NO: 187 C APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): CLEVE'S TOO, Mr. John Walling, 45-260 Club Drive, Indian Wells, CA 92260. NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Request for modification to mall exterior. LOCATION: Palm Desert Town Center. ZONE: PC-3 S.P. Mr. Smith indicated that this was a request for some minor alterations involving a recessed and embossed design over the entry to the "Cleve's Too" restaurant at the Palm Desert Town Center. - 2 - ..- � �� � ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 24, 1983 CASE NO. 187 C (CONTINUED): Mr. John Walling was present to represent this case and reviewed the el evati ons and plans with the commission. He acknowledged that the signs shown on the plans were not under review by the commission and a detailed sign presentation would be submitted shortly. He then asked if it would be possible to start work on the interior. Mr. Diaz replied that it would be okay. On a motion by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner 1ilartin, the preliminary plans for modification of the exterior of the restaurant were approved. Motion carried 5-0-1 with Commissioner Cook abstaining. III. DISCUSSION ITEMS: NONE IV.
