The meeting was called to order at 2:00 pm after a one hour study session. Members Present: Ron Gregory, Chairman Rick Holden Bernie Leung Charlie Martin Members Absent: Al Cook Staff Present: Ray Diaz Steve Smith Phil Drell Donna Gomez It was moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Leung to approve the minutes of July 23, 1985 as written. Carried 2-0-2 (Chairman Gregory and Commissioner Martin abstaining). [I . Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Martin to approve the following cases by minute motion. Carried 4-0. ZONE: S. I . In discussion of this case, it was noted that provision of sidewalks may be required by the city. Subject to the conditions noted in the staff report. 2. CASE NO: 265 C APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): WILLIAM ALEXANDER, 483 E. Via Escuela, Palm Springs, CA 92262; BOB HARMON, 2090 Bernie Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262. NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Preliminary approval of 48,000 square foot two story office warehouse. LOCATION: West side of Corporate Way. ZONE: S. I . Subject to the following conditions: 1 . That a intense final landscape plan be submitted. 2. Front elevation plan to be submitted. 3. Increase the size of the landscaped islands in the parking lot by eliminating four parking spaces. 4. Revise the location of the front row of parking to provide a deeper landscape strip adjacent to the street. IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1 . STUDIO 10 BEAUTY SUPPLY - EL PASEO AWNING This item had been approved at a previous meeting subject to the colors being changed to grey and maroon (burgundy) . Mr. Mark Beatty was submitting this item for reconsideration of the white and black awning. He indicated that he would be using a white vinyl which would not get as dirty as the previously submitted 3 1*4w MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION AUGUST 13, 1965 materials. He noted that the applicant's products are black and white and that she would like to keep the awning the same colors. It was moved by Commissioner Martin, seconded by Commissioner Leung to approve as presented, deleting condition #1 so that the colors will be black and white, all other conditions to remain unchanged. Carried 3-1 (Commissioner Holden opposed) . 2. CASHMERE PEOPLE - AWNING Applicant proposed a burgundy awning with grey lettering. Mr. Smith noted that they may need an encroachment permit if the poles are in the public right-of-way. Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Leung to approve the awning as submitted. Carried 4-0. 3. DEEP CANYON INN - AWNING Applicant proposed a tan color awning with a valance. Moved by Commissioner Leung, seconded by Commissioner Martin to approve the awning as submitted. Carried 4-0. 4. SIGNS Commissioner Martin indicated that the Ortho Mattress sign had been installed without the center notch being filled in, which was part of the approval . Commissioner Martin questioned a banner posted at Nonchalance. Mr. Diaz indicated that this matter has been discussed and in the process of being resolved. 5. HEIGHT LIMIT AMENDMENT Mr. Drell outlined the proposed amendment to height limits in R-2 and R-3 zones and indicated that the planning commission wanted the architectural commission to comment on these height limits. Commissioner Holden stated that it would seem better to review each case on an individual basis. He felt that the proposed code amendment would not solve the problem and limit the freedom of the architect. 4 MlNUTES ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION AUGUST 13~ 1985 Mr. Diaz indicated that Plunninq onmmis5ion wanted to know if architects could design interesting bui |dinoe within these height limits. Commissioner Martin ouqgeoted that staff recommend to aPplicantn that they keep the height limit to 22 or 24 feet and leave the cod* at 30 feet. Commissioner Leung yugqesteU that the line-of-site method be used in determining each individual setback or height limit. Mr, Steve Sul \ ivan, architect . was present and stated that he thought there should be some flexibility that, enables architects to work with. He thou(, that with these maximum height limits there would be e lot of duplication of design. that the architects will be limited in *hat they design. Mr, Bob Ricciardi , architect, noted that he would prefar that the code remain the same and indicated that 90% of the architects in the area would agree.
