Mr. Smith indicated that staff had two concerns with the praposed si4n. The size of the sign exceeds the limit permitted by cade anci the fact that the sign is to read "Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner", which the commission has been opposed to in the past. Gommissioner Cook was concerned that the additional signage was a completely separate sign. He felt that the proposed sign should tie in with the existing sign. He asked the applicant if all of the signs could be redesiqned. Commissioner Martin indicated that he could p�t as much signage inside of the windows as he wanted and suggested that he use neon t� make it more visible. Mr. Smith noted that code states that the siqnage must be 3 feet from the window. The applicant indicated that the existing sign was too small and tr�at he was tryinq to let people know that they served food. He stated that it wou1d GOSt him between $7,0�0 and $8,0�0 to redesign the siqns. Commissioner McCrea suggested that he just put "restaurant", instead of breakfast, lunch, dinner. Moved by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner McCrea to continue this case so that the applicant may restudy his submittal . Carried 5-0 3. LOCATIOIV: 74-040 Ei Paseo Mr. Smith indicated that the commission, in study session, thought that the siqn would be more appropriate if it were on long siqn rather than two separate lines. Mark Beatty, applicant, indicated that the sign had been previou�lv approved at staff level and that if it wasn't alrPadY made tha� he would try to see if it could be changed. Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Martin to approve the awnings as submitted and ta change the sign to one line if possible. NATURE OF PROJECT/APPRC)VAL SOUGHT: Approval of RV shelter. LOCATI�1: 73-775 Shadow Lake Mr. Baker presented pictures of the lot directiy adiacent to his which is vacant. Ne also presented pictures of other RV shelters in Palm Desert. Commissioner Cook felt that this was not the proper architectural element to put on a house. Moved by Commissioner Ho1dPn, seconded by Commissioner McCrea to approve this case. Carried 4 a- 1 (Commissioner Cook opposedl . 6. APPLICANT (ANO ADDRESS): MR. 8 MRS. OBRIEN, 74-110 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert, CA 92260. NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROYAL SOUGHT: Approvai of 4' high chain link fence. LOCATION: 74-110 Fred Waring Orive Mr. 0'brien indicated that he was installing the fence 5 feet from the property line and that he would be witling to plant landscaping in front of the fence with an irrigation system. He presented a letter with signatures from neighbors stating that they had no problem with the fence. Commissioner Martin thought that they should look at this as a project that should be viewed to see how it works. It should be permitted as long as it is maintained well . Commissioner Holden and Chairman Gregory indicated that they would be for approvinq this if it were landscaped heavilY. Chairman Gregory suggested that a landscape plan be provided. Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded b� Commissioner Cook to approve this case subject to a landscape plan being submitted. Carried 5-0. Chairman Gregory wanted it noted that this apprc�vai should be viewed as a special interest case in that the commission would like to see how this type of situation will work. This case was approved because the applicant h�ad adjoining property owner approval and is going to pravide heavY tandscaping. 5 � �: MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION FEBRUARY 11, 1986 IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS: 1. PElTRO'S RESTAURANT - REMODEL Mr. Smith indicated that the applicant was asking for conceptual appraval only on his idea. Mario, owner, explained that he was trying to improve his buiiding by hiding the storage area which has mops and other supplies which are visible from the street. He indicated that he would be extending the existing walls and adding arches and pillars to make it appear italian. Commission had some 4uestion as to whether this wall was built t� hoid an additianal 3 to 4 feet of structure. Commissioner Holden felt that the concept was good but thought that the construction aspect might not work. Chairman Gregory recommended that the applicant receive some design assistance when drawing up plans. Commissioner Martin indicated that the concept was fine but that the commission will need to see elevation drawings. Moved by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Holden to approve the concept. Carried 5-0 2. APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): CLEVE'S RESTAURANT NA7URE OF PROJECTIAPPROVAL SaJGHT: Preliminary and finai approval of plans for Cleve's restaurant. LOGATION: South side Highway 111 between Vacation and Continental Inn's. Commissioner Holden thought that the building had too much stucco without any break. The applicant explained that he was trying to keep in the same design and coloring of the two hotels. Commissioner Martin indicated that he wouid like to see preliminary drawings showing tandscaping and colored drawings. He was concerned with the trellis areas twisting. 6 � � MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION FEBRUARY I1, 1986 The applicants left the meeting to obtain colored drawings and a landscape plan, which they then submitted. Commissioner Holden indicated that the wood wili dry out and twist. Commissioner Martin suggested that the stain color for the columns be lighter and the stucco be darker. Maved by Commissioner Martin, seconded by Commissioner Holden to qrant preliminary and final approval of the structural plans and preliminary appraval of landscape plan sub,ject to the followinq: 1 . That the stucco color be darker and the stain be a lighter color. Carried 4-0-1 (Chairman Gregory abstaining) 3, CASE N0: 1109 SA APPLICANT {AND ADDRESS) : UNIQUE PROPERTY SERVICES, 72-655 Highway 111 NATl1RE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of grey and burgundy sign. Mr. Smith noted that most of the signs in the area were redwood sandblasted. Commissioner Cook thought that most of the other signs in the area were individual letters and that this one should be also. Moved by Commissioner Martin, seconded by Commissioner McCrea ta aliow staff to approve this cas� if the applicant wili make the sign individual letters. Carried 5-0 4. CASE N0: 1108 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS): D & A SHADE COMPANY for SOAP OPERA, P.O. Box 417, Palm Springs, CA 92262. NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approva) of awning. Commission Holden requested that he see what is on either side of the awning. Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded bY Commissioner Cook to continue this case until the next meeting. Carried 5-0 5. MOBIL OIL STATION Applicant was requesting approval of signage to be on one side of a canopy. Commissioner Cook suggested that the applicant put signs on both sides of the canopy for better visibility. He asked that staff make s�re that this was allowed by code. Moved by Commissioner Cook, secanded by Commissioner Martin ta apProve two signs if allowed by code. Carried 4-0-1 (Chairman Gregory abstaining) . 6. FRED WARING PROFESSIONAL BUILDING - SIGN Mr. Martin submitted samples of the letters color and sizes. The letters will be painted a maroon coior and the letters will be 12" and 8" high. Moved by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Holden to approve the sign as s�bmitted. Carried 4-0-t (Corrxnissioner Martin abstainingl . 7. VALLEY CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY F'lans for preliminary approval of an additional were submitted. Comrnission had no concerns with the proposal . Moved by Commissioner Holden, seconded by Commissioner Cook to grant preliminary approval . Carried 5-U 8. SACRED HEART CHURCH Applicant was requesting approval of a landscape plan. Carried 4-0-1 (Chairman Gregory abstaining) . 9. THE GOLO SHOPPE - SIGN The applicant was requesting the words "Gold Shoppe" to be on two additional sides of the approved awning.
