Mr. Drell indicated that the proposal is for two signs reading
"Centuzy 21 Enery and Investments" in yellow, cream and brown
colors.
Commission felt that there were too many colors being proposed.
Colors should be reduced to two colors; the two signs were ok
because they are spaced a sufficient distance apart. It was suggest
that Centuxy 21 F]nery be yellaw in color and InvestmP.nts be brown in
color.
It was moved by Commissioner McCrea, seconded by Camiissioner
Sullivan to approve this case subject to the oondition that the
Centuzy 21 Emery sign be yellaw and the Investments sign be Brown
both signs to have a tan trinming. Crried 5-0.

Camtission was auicerned about the lack of detailing on the carport.
The camtission felt that either a v,od or metal detail sYxuld be
added to the carport. The applicant iridicated that the addition
of a wood or metal detail an the awning wuld be acceptable.
Camussiarier Sullivan felt that the 2 inch fascia was rxt sufficient
and suggested that it be wider.
It was moved by Commissioner Sullivan, seaonded by Calm.issioner
Holden to apprave this case subject to a 6 inch, metal fascia, color
to match the primazy color of the building, beirig added. Staff to

Mr. Drell indicated that the trellises have been changed to awnings
intead.
The applicant rwted that awniuzgs are naw being proposed, and that
signage will be placed under the awnings. The building architecture
on the north elevation (back) is designed to elmpate the look of
being the back side of the building.
Camlissioner Sullivan felt that the north elevation of the building
resembled the back side of a buildi.ng with the proposed design. He
felt that it looked plain and that if the trees were removed there
would be rx architectural design on the elevation, and would not
bother with the vaulted awriings.

Camiissioner Drury suggested that a stxuctural piece be added and
place the awnings inside the structure. The applicant indicated
that the awrirgs could be a mixture of different t,ypes of awnings,
trellises and sun control ter.hniques.
Cannissioner Holden suggested that the elevation detaili.ng be pulled
cm to pedestrian level and extended across the buildirig elevation.
It was moved by Cannissioner Holden, seconded by Comnissioner Drury
to approve this case subject to the condition that a trellis
structure be pulled dam to pedestrian level and extended across the
ryorth building elevation (parliirig lot elevation). Carried 5-0.

V. ORAL IICATILS:
Comnissioner Drury asked how much money was budgeted for the architectural
calmission lunches. She felt that it would be better to have the lunches
delivered instead of having staff take time-off for this purpose when
they could be cking city work instead. Mr. Smith will look into this
matter.
Camlissioner Dny also comnented an the sign orclinance and sane of the
recent chariges that have been made. She stated that in the ordinance it
reads that signage an awnings is considered part of a business' allaaed
signage square footage. A list of CairrLissioner Druzy's camients were
submitted ( attachment A) regarding awnings, signs and signage
requirements.
Ftizrther discussion pursued on awni.rigs, signs and signage.

TRADE CONSTRUCTTOr1 IGNS
Individual signs for trades are acceptable as long as they are
limited to 2 SF and are all mounted in the same area.
Many times subs change or there may be duplicate subs, such as
one for the shell and one for tenant improvement.
Because most construction projects are of short duration, these
signs differ greatly than most business signs.
There should be a provision for immediate abatement of signs in
the event a project is shut down for an extended period of time.
AWNINGS
There should be a provision to remove other signs if there is to
be signage on an awning; or at least all existing signs, as well
as the awning signage, should be considered to determine if a
sign exceeds the maximum allowable square footage.
RE "E" , Section 25 .68 .610 - 8" is too limiting. If a sign does
not exceed the total SF allowed, then letters over 8" should be
permitted, but in no case should lettering exceed 1/3 of the
awning height.
If 8" remains as the letter height, it should be considered for
lowercase Zetters with upcase allowed greater than 8" up to a
maximum of 10" .
Consideration should be given for logos and business colors,
limited in acrr and maximum number of colors to two.

RE "I" , Section 25 .68 .610 - Drop awnings could be acceptable in
some conditions. They should not be totally prohibited. In some
cases the design of a building may be best suited for drop type
awnings and one that would serve a sun control purpose.
What about maintenance and abatement of awnings, etc. ?
