APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of December 8, 1992 were continued to the January 12, 1993 meeting. III . It was moved by Commissioner Urrutia, seconded by Commissioner Van Vliet, to approve the following cases by minute motion. Motion carried 3-0 . A. Final Drawings : 1 . MARTIN for REDONDO DON' S, 40-840 Thunderbird Road, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 �L r.r✓ Name MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION DECEMBER 22 , 1992 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Final approval of landscape plan and signage LOCATION: 72-291 Highway 111 ZONE: C-1 Upon reviewing the submitted plans and presentations by staff and by the applicant, the architectural commission by minute motion approved the following: 1) Preliminary landscape plan as submitted 2 ) Revised freestanding sign with two menu items and toned down color, subject to using ivory background 3) Two logo signs, one each on Fred Waring and parking lot sides with maximum three items 4 ) Color board with red deleted 5) Revisions to size and shape of patio as per applicant ' s meeting with Mayor 6) Revisions to entry ( i .e. delete proposed entry on Fred Waring side and redesign of existing entry B. Preliminary Plans : 1 . CASE NO. : PP 92-9 APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : GENERAL CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT, 41-865 Boardwalk, Suite 112 , Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Preliminary approval of architectural and landscape plans for office professional LOCATION: Northwest corner of Cook Street and Sheryl Avenue ZONE: R-3 (4) Upon reviewing the submitted plans and presentations by staff and by the applicant, the architectural commission by minute motion approved architectural plans and continued landscape plans, subject to comments of Eric Johnson. 2 MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION DECEMBER 22 , 1992 C. Miscellaneous Cases : 1 . CASE NO. : 329 MF APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : KELVIE KING, 74-126 Chicory Street, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of Certificate of Conformance LOCATION: 45-898/45-902 Lantana ZONE: R-1 Upon reviewing the submitted plans and presentations by staff and by the applicant, the architectural commission by minute motion approved the Certificate of Conformance subject to staff approval of landscape plan revisions . IV. The following cases were added to the agenda by a unanimous vote: 1 . CASE NO. : 3075 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS, 74-675 Highway 111, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of low voltage twinkle lights in palm trees LOCATION: 74-675 Highway 111 ZONE: PC (4 ) Mr. Larry Biggert, G.M. , Holiday Inn Express, told commission his hotel was having difficulty being identified by patrons who arrive after dark. He also asked commission if he could re-orient the freestanding sign which was recently installed. Commission agreed that visibility and identity was a problem given the location of the building on the site, the location of signs, and the location of trees . Commission suggested that the applicant come up with a comprehensive plan to address the issues . The applicant could meet with Eric Johnson to consider re-location of trees and could also consider placing the freestanding sign in a planter area in the middle of the access driveway. 3 Ifteli MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION DECEMBER 22, 1992 Action: On a motion by Commissioner Urrutia, seconded by Commissioner Van Vliet, the case was continued for a comprehensive proposal to address all the issues ( i .e. visibility and identify) presented by Larry Biggert, G.M. , Holiday Inn Express . Motion carried 3-0 . 2 . CASE NO. : 1469 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : B.B. O'BRIENS, 72-185 Painters Path, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: New sign LOCATION: 72-185 Painters Path ZONE: C-1 The applicant explained that the sign would be a can sign mounted 3/4 inch off the wall framed by recessed white neon which will create a halo effect around the sign perimeter. Action: It was moved by Commissioner Van Vliet, seconded by Commissioner Urrutia, to approve the sign as proposed, subject to removal of existing sign. Motion carried 3-0 . 3 . CASE NO. : 4067 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : DESERT CORNERSTONE MARBLE AND GRANITE INC. , 42-005 Cook Street, Suite 300, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Approval of sign program LOCATION: 42-005 Cook Street ZONE: S . I . The applicant was not present. Commission reviewed the plans as submitted and felt additional information was necessary as follows : 1) Will they be illuminated? 2 ) How thick will they be? 3) Where will they be placed on the building? 4 ) Color revision should be considered. 4 MINUTES ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMISSION DECEMBER 22 , 1992 Action: Accordingly, it was moved by Commissioner Urrutia, seconded by Commissioner Van Vliet, to continue this case. Motion carried 3-0 . 4 . CASE NO. : 1470 SA APPLICANT (AND ADDRESS) : NORA MARTIN, 73-956 El Paseo, Palm Desert, CA 92260 NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: New sign LOCATION: 73-956 E1 Paseo ZONE: C-1 The applicant explained that his client was locating in a vacant unit at 73-956 E1 Paseo. The previous tenant had a sign mounted on the brass architectural projection. When the sign was removed the brass face is unattractive due to exposed drilled holes . The proposal then was to cover the brass was a thin sheet of colored material and install a new sign over it. This was unacceptable to commission as it would look odd next to the existing sign and brass face on the twin unit to the east. Commission felt the damaged brass face should be repaired or replaced and appropriate signage placed thereon. Action: Accordingly, it was moved by Commissioner Urrutia, seconded by Commissioner Van Vliet to continue this case directing the applicant to attempt to match the existing sign and background to the east.
