MINUTES July 24, 2018
V. CASES:
A. Final Drawings:
1. CASE NO: MISC 18-0015
APPLICANT AND ADDRESS: SHIRLEY G. SPORK, P.O. Box 637,
Palm Springs, CA 92261
NATURE OF PROJECT/APPROVAL SOUGHT: Consideration to
approve a color change for a single family dwelling Spork Residence.
LOCATION: 73010 SOMERA ROAD
ZONE: R-1 10,000
Mr. Nick Melloni, Assistant Planner, presented for request for paint color
change for single-family residence from tan to light pink with a mauve
trim. He presented photo slides of the home, as well as the wrought iron
gate along the eastern property line. Mr. Melloni said this color change
is pastel and subdued and is not very visible from the street. Staff is
recommending approval as presented.
MS. SHIRLEY SPORK, resident, said the color of her house has
changed a couple of times since 1976. She recently changed colors to
update the exterior of the house.
The Commission reviewed and discussed the main body color and trim.
Commissioner McIntosh said he didn't have an issue with the color as
this is a low-key desert color that doesn't stand out. Commissioner
Vuksic said this Commission has always been careful about keeping
more saturated colors on smaller elements which is what the applicant
has done.
ACTION:
Commissioner Lambell moved to approve as presented. Motion was seconded
by Commissioner Brewer and carried by a 7-0 vote, with Brewer, Lambell,
Levin, McAuliffe, McIntosh, Vuksic, and Van Vliet voting YES.

C. Miscellaneous Items:
1. Discussion Only: Review of plans for: El Paseo Hotel
Mr. Eric Ceja, Principal Planner, presented the Hotel Paseo project and
highlighted the differences between the approved preliminary plans and
the constructed hotel. Staff further explained that the difference
between the built condition and the preliminary plans is a result of a
bifurcated building plan submittal that allowed the developer to move
forward with some aspects of the building prior to completing final
design for the entire building. In addition, the lack of coordination
between the City's third-party plan reviewer and the Planning
Department led to design changes that were missed by the Planning
Department. Staff has identified the deficiencies in the review process
and has taken corrective action to avoid these issues in the future.
The following items were not approved as constructed: replaced
spandrel glass with metal railings on balconies; roof-mounted
screening; stone work; additional balconies; removal of recessed
portions on the building; reduced the amount of landscape. Staff has
discussed these changes with the applicant and he has agreed to color
changes that are more in line with approved preliminary plans.
ACTION:
No Action Taken. Discussion Only.
VI. COMMENTS
The Commission and staff discussed San Pablo Avenue and El Paseo.
