i PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE MINUTES MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2017—6 P.M. ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM 73-510 FRED WARING DRIVE, PALM DESERT, CA92260 I. CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Patricia Dan convened the meeting at 6:00 p.m. II. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None 4 ' MIN TES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JUNE 5, 2017 IV. PRESENTATIONS Mayor Harnik presented Ms. Ahmad with a thank you gift for her years of service on the Youth Committee. Janine Judy, Event Chair, presented information on the Relay For Life (RFL) event on October 7, 2017 and invited members to join the RFL planning committee. V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. MINUTES of the May 1, 2017, Palm Desert Youth Committee meeting Upon a motion by Member Frary, second by Member Schwartz, and a 13-2 vote of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Ahmad, Berenbaum, Chang, Dan, Fitzpatrick, Frary, Johnson, C. Kim, L. Kim, Ross, Schwartz, Shaw and Wood; NOES: None; ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT: Cho and Haile), the May 1, 2017, Minutes were approved as presented. VI. NEW BUSINESS Upon consensus by the Committee, Member Frary was appointed to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and provide an update on Youth Committee activities at the June 22, 2017 City Council Meeting: VII. OLD BUSINESS A. No-Idling Zones — Ms. Glickman discussed holding a meeting on this topic over the summer and passed around a sign-up sheet. B. Summer Youth Senior Technology Workshops - Ms. Glickman is working with the Joslyn Center to determine dates for summer workshops and will update Youth Committee members over the summer. Vlll. CONTINUED BUSINESS None 2 MINU ES PALMID DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE JUNE 5, 2017 IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COUNCIL MEMBERS Mayor Harnik presented information from the Southern California Association of Government's General Assembly held in Palm Desert in May. One of the big takeaways for her was a presentation on the progress of autonomous vehicles. She presented information from the International Conference of Shopping Centers where she learned about "big data" and parking geo-fencing. She reported that the Environmental Impact report for the CV Link was approved by the Coachella Valley Association of Governments Executive Committee and the CV Link in Cathedral City has already broken ground. A Youth Committee Member inquired as to the Mayor's announcement that she will be running for Riverside County Supervisor and Mayor Harnik acknowledged that she would be running. B. Legislative Review Committee Ms. Glickman and Mayor Harnik presented to the committee Assemblymember Evan Low's proposed bill ACA 10 which proposes to lower the voting age in California from 18 to 17. The bill purports that lowering the voting age will increase voter turnout and that if youths are engaged at an earlier age they will continue to vote as they grow older. After a lengthy discussion, the Committee and alternate members determined that they would not advise the lowering of the voting age by an informal vote of 14 opposed and 2 in favor. C. STAFF 1. Presentations Ms. Glickman reminded the committee members to turn in their attendance sheets. D. COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Events Youth//Senior Technology Workshop at Joslyn Center—August 10, 2017 2. Other Committee/Commission Reports - No update. X.
