I. CALL TO ORDER
Committee Chair Patricia Dan convened the meeting at 6:01 p.m.

IV. PRESENTATIONS
A. Relay For Life —American Cancer Society Fundraising Event
Janine Judy presented on and invited the Youth Committee members to
volunteer for the Relay For Life on Saturday, October 7, 2017 in the Civic
Center Park. A sign-up sheet was circulated.
B. YMCA of the Desert—Y Be Fit Desert Challenge
Rob Ballew presented on and invited the Youth Committee members to
volunteer for the YMCA's Y Be Fit Desert Challenge event on Sunday,
October 1, 2017 in the Civic Center Park. A sign-up sheet was circulated.
C. Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce— Golf Cart Parade
Rob Ballew presented on and invited the Youth Committee members to
volunteer for the Golf Cart Parade on Sunday, October 29, 2017. A sign-up
sheet was circulated.
D. Discussion of Administrative .Services — Lori Carney, Dir. of Administrative
Services
Ms. Carney talked with the Committee about her role at the City and
presented information on how to prepare for a job/college interview.
V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. MINUTES of the June 5, 2017, Youth Committee meeting
Upon a motion by Member Fitzpatrick, second by Member Shaw, and a 14-0 vote
of the Youth Committee, (AYES: Berenbaum, Chang, Cho, Dan, Fitzpatrick, Frary, Haile,
Johnson, C. Kim, L. Kim, Ross, Schwartz, Shaw, and Wood; NOES: None;
ABSTENTIONS: None; ABSENT; None), the Minutes of June 5, 2017 were approved as
submitted.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
A. ELECTION of Chair for the 2017/18 School Year
Members Dan, Fitzpatrick, Chang and Johnson were nominated for the Chair
position. Members Dan and Fitzpatrick withdrew their nominations and Members
Chang and Johnson declared their candidacy and gave statements of
qualification.

r' Upon a motion by Member Frary, second by Member Berenbaum and carried by
a unanimous vote by the Youth Committee, Member Chang was elected to serve as
Youth Committee Chair for the 201.7/18 school year.
B. ELECTION of Vice-Chair for the 2017/18 School Year
Members Ross, Berenbaum, Johnson, C. Kim, L. Kim, Shaw, and Wood were
nominated. Members Shaw and Wood withdrew their nominations. Members
Ross, Berenbaum, Johnson, C. Kim, and L. Kim, declared their candidacy and
gave statements of qualification.
Upon a motion by Member Shaw, second by Member Fitzpatrick and carried by a
unanimous vote by the Youth Committee, Member Johnson was elected to serve as
Youth Committee Vice-Chair for the 2017/18 school year.
VII. OLD BUSINESS
A. Summer Youth Senior Technology Workshops—
The summer workshop went well and the Joslyn Center would like to
collaborate on future workshops.

IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. COUNCIL MEMBERS
No report.
B. STAFF
Ms. Glickman handed out attendance tracking sheets for members to
track their volunteer hours throughout the year so the information can be
used for future letters of appreciation.
Travel and Activity Release forms were also handed out for parental
signature and asked that they be returned at the meeting in October.
Staff gave an overview of the Brown Act.

C. COMMITTEE MEMBERS
1. Events —
a. Youth Senior Technology Workshops—TBD
It was determined that Wednesdays are the best day of the week for
the members to do a workshop.
b. Anti-bullying Workshop— October, 2018
The workshop will be postponed until November.
c. Holiday Party - Lincoln After School Program — December, 2018
Members expressed an interest in hosting this event again.
d. Youth Committee Presentation —
Palm Desert Charter Middle School - January 18, 2018 — 4:00 p.m.
Members expressed an interest in presenting this again.
e. Earth Day—
Lincoln After School Program —April 19, 2018 - 3:15 p.m. Members
expressed an interest in hosting this event again.
2. Projects —
a. No-Idle Zone for Cleaner Air For Schools — Update
An updated schedule was handed out. Member Johnson agreed to
reach out to the Principal of Palm Desert Charter Middle School.
3. Sub-Committee Updates
a. Anti-bullying Subcommittee -
No Report.
b. Palm Desert Sister Cities Foundation —
Meeting took place on September 5, 2017. The Foundation donated
$250 to the Hurricane Harvey relief effort. A Sister Cities Southern
California meeting is schedule for November.

COMMITTEE MEMBER AND APPOINT ONE (1) NEW MEMBER TO
THE PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE

Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
1. Accept the resignation of Palm Desert Youth Committee member Maira
Ahmad; and
2. Appoint Umair Ahmad to the Palm Desert Youth Committee.
Strategic Plan Objective
The Palm Desert Youth Committee assists with the Economic Development goal of
expanding quality education so that people are prepared for the workplace of the
future. It also assists with the Education goal of creating community awareness of,
and support for, the building blocks of student success, including academic,
vocational, and career success.
Background
As a result of her graduation from high school, appointed Palm Desert Youth
Committee member Maira Ahmad has given a verbal resignation from the Committee.
Consequently, the Committee now has a vacancy. Staff is proposing that the vacancy
be filled by Umair Ahmad, who is already serving on the Committee as an alternate.
